Fatty Liver does it do this?

Does fatty liver cause pain under the right rib? I read through the internet and some people don't realize they have it.

I have many post about my gallbladder removal. I had it removed about a year ago. I started to have problems though. I had diarrehea, nausea or indigestion, pain under right rib, I was tired, belching, and all this caused my anxiety to come back. I felt like I couldn't take care of my kids to my full capacity anymore because of the slight pain I was going through. My whole summer was spent visiting the doctor for testing. I had just about every test a gasterologist could give you and he told me it was all in my head. I even had a colonoscopy done and I am 42 years old. I started acupuncture and meditation thinking it was anxiety or depression causing all this. I did discover Welchol which absorbed the bile in my stomach and I don't have diarrehea anymore. I was eating right and lost 50 lbs but I have another 60 to lose. I come to grips that I have to live like this. So for about 3 months I was feeling really good no stomach problems everything was quiet and I had a little anxiety. About a week ago it seems to have come back (all the symptoms I mentioned above) - My pain under right rib returned. I don't know if this is stress or anxiety causing this. I know that I am going through some slight depression and I cry sometimes but I wouldn't think it would cause these problems. I recently went to my doctor to get a complete physical and she said you have to lose weight because my liver enzymes were slightly elevated and it might be your fatty liver. I worried about that after she told me but then I started to exercise more and eat less to lose. I have gone through some horrible stress with the swine flu scare and other family issues and I thought maybe my stress is catching up with me. I am like thinking the worst like I have some severe liver problem and I am going to have to be rushed to the hospital. I also feel like I can't go anywhere when I have this pain because I think it will get worse if I am in public. HAs anyone gone through this or do you think my anxiety is causing all this???

Thank you in advance for your help, I realize that this was posted the end of 08 but I am really hoping that you still get this. I am going through the same symptoms and I hope that after all this time if you can tell me if the weight loss helped, did the pain go away after you lost the weight? My fear is that I will loose all my weight and the pain will still be there. I have to eat quite a bit of raw veggie's and fruits, no wheat, no meat, no dairy to avoid the pain. I am only getting about 900 calories a day, if I am lucky, because it hurts to eat sometimes. Thank you so much again and I hope you are well.

I don't know yet if the weight makes a difference. Still trying to figure out if that is the problem or not. I am eating soup right now and that seems to go down ok. I know what you mean about 900 calories a day - I am down to water, soup, crackers, oatmeal - just the blandess food you can think of.

Re: Fatty Liver does it do this?

I just wanted to put my findings out there for everyone to see. My pain started in October of 2009 and the Dr. found my fatty liver in February of 2010. Blood work and ultrasound did not show anything wrong with my liver. My Dr. finally ordered me to have a CT Scan with iodine and that's when she diagnosed me. I am going on 4 months now of eating a strict diabetic diet with extremely low fat. I have lost close to 50 pounds and finally the pain has eased up. If I eat red meat or even a piece of low fat cheese, the pain comes back but it's not as bad as when I first started out. The Dr. says that by the end of this year I should be completely back to normal "IF" I continue to exercise 30 minutes -350 calories a day and eat correctly. It's funny when people say "you better do the right thing and take care of yourself"! I want to tell them, look, if you felt a horrific pain every time you ate something bad...you would stop eating that thing, so there is no way for me to do "the wrong thing". Pain is a huge motivator and I love my life, hence I do the right thing. I will give another update at the end of the year but I just wanted people to know that are just starting out with this diagnosis that it's not a quick fix and it's a permanent lifestyle change. Good luck and I have listed my supplements and food I eat below just in case it will help.

Supplements:
Cranberry pills twice a day
Turmeric middle of the day mid-meal
Cinnamon twice a day
Dandelion Root twice a day
Grapeseed extract twice a day
Artichoke extract twice a day
Metformin twice a day (diabetes)
Protonix twice a day (acid stomach)

All Organic Food:
1 stalk celery per day
At least one Cucumber per day
Cherries
Mango
Strawberries
Beets and beet juice
Soy products (Boca burgers, breakfast patties, etc.)
Egg whites
Chicken
1 bunch of Parsley per day
Also, parsley water once a day
Sargento fat free cheese sticks (mozzarella)
As many fresh vegetables and fruits as I can eat per day-according to pain.
If something is going to hurt you, you will know 20 min to an hour after you eat. Write down everything that hurts and do not eat it.

Re: Fatty Liver does it do this?

gigi11,
I feel for you and what you're going through. I am having pain too, and am anxious to know when it will go away, etc.
I will say, do continue with the meditating, and acupuncture if you can. Things are hard to do when we're anxious, and we stress our bodies more, so it doesn't help the liver. Now, in NO way do I believe your pain is imaginary, cause I'm having it too. Take care of your feelings and emotions, because they're very important just like your liver.

crittel,

Thank you SO much for posting your news and update, it has helped me feel a little optimistic.
I had pain for 2 weeks, and luckily was quickly diagnosed with fat in my liver, but was not given any guidance at all of what I should do other than "cut out the fat, lose weight". I have a follow up appt soon and hope I get more info.
The dull pain I've had for 2 weeks, 24 hours a day has seemed to go away, but for the last two days I have been getting sharp quick pinching pains a couple of times of day....they only last a few seconds. I have been eating the most healthy these passed 2 days, more raw veggies, etc.
Ugh, so for a newbie that doesn't know what's going on with her liver, I appreciate your post.

Re: Fatty Liver does it do this?

Crittel --

I'm curious if the doctor you're seeing is a specialist (i.e., gastroenterologist or hepatologist). Fatty liver (steatosis) or even an inflamed fatty liver (steatohepatitis) should cause little to no direct symptoms involving the liver other than a feeling of fullness under your ribcage and perhaps some tenderness. Other, indirect symptoms might include fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea or indigestion, but even then generally only if your liver is inflamed or the fatty liver deposits are severe enough to have caused fibrosis or some cirrhotic scarring. In fact, a recent case of mania (until it cropped up, I had no idea I had bipolar disorder, but that's for another forum) drove me to drink myself straight into the hospital to detox from alcohol, during which liver inflammation caused by my week-long binge was discovered using blood tests. Because I'm slightly obese and was previously a nightly drinker, I'd bet the rent I have fatty liver, so right now I'm likely in a phase of acute alcoholic steatohepatitis, and yet I have no symptoms whatsoever (other than my doctor being able to feel that my liver is slightly enlarged); I have no pain or tenderness, my appetite is good, my digestion is good, and my energy level is fine. And this is with my AST and ALT enzymes currently in the 400 and 500s!

Bottom line is that liver ailments can be notoriously difficult to detect owing to their tendency to be asymptomatic. In fact, if I (foolishly) decided to drink a six-pack of beer tonight, even though I'd be setting my liver back from healing itself, I'd notice no ill effects as a result (other than perhaps a hangover). The fact that eating a bit of the wrong food quickly gives you misery really makes me think there's something else going on besides fatty liver, as in some sort of gallbladder or bile duct ailment, or something else my layman's mind isn't aware of.

Don't get me wrong -- the diet and exercise regimen you are currently on sounds like it can do you nothing but good. But if I were you, I'd be asking for either a specialist or, if you're already seeing one, a second opinion.

My two cents, I am not a doctor nor do I play one on the Internet, etc., etc. Good fortune to you.
