Masses on liver found - newbie - help!

Hi all.

I am a 30 year old female who is very healthy. Run, weighlift, don't really drink, no drugs, and I don't smoke. No family history of any major illness.

I had some symptoms that concerned me last Thursday-Sundy (fullness, burping, bloatedness, sharp pain in my right side just under where my ribcage stops) and went in to see my urgent care doctor. They thought it was consistent with gallbladder problems and referred me out for an ultrasound. Got it done, and was told my gallbladder was fine, but there were masses on my liver – with one measuring 5cm. Very scary!! I had a CT scan done, and that was review by an ER doctor (yes, I went to the ER – the pain in my right side combined with the news about the masses really sent me for a tizzy so I went in) and they said a biopsy was probably the next step. My bloodwork (taken after they knew I had the masses on my liver per the ultrasound) was fine, vitals good, etc.

Saw my primary care physician (pcp) yesterday. Vitals fine again. Not really having any of the symptoms that initially prompted me to go to the doctor in the first place. He was very encouraging, and noted that the possibility of anything being not benign was very statistically small and that it was “most likely benign”. He did want to be cautious about doing a biopsy, and thought maybe I could see a gastroenterologist first. And he wanted to check w/the radiologist that did the CT at the hospital. Well, my pcp checked with him. The radiologist, my pcp told me, thinks that it is an adenoma, but that they can’t rule out that it may not be something benign, and that they are concerned about that 5cm mass and want to biopsy it. My pcp said it was "futile to speculate at this time". I guess he has to say that, but I wish he could say it can't be something really bad... Also I guess a hemangioma is a slight possibility.

So – I am waiting for my pcp’s nurse to call me back. I am absolutely beside myself in panic. I am terrified. I do not understand why they cannot tell what it is from an ultrasound and a CT scan. I am also concerned because they need to biopsy it – that seems to suggest something serious. My husband and I do not have anyone down here with us in Florida and we are just really terrified and worried. I just don’t understand, and I am looking for some guidance. I have never had any major health problems and this is completely out of the blue. I don’t even have any symptoms now – my pain is gone, and no bloating!! I am just scared and so I am looking for advice or guidance. Thank you.

Re: Masses on liver found - newbie - help!

I went through exactly what you went through last year. I had my biopsy on December 16, 2008 and found out on December 24, 2008 that my tumors where benign. Please try not to get to anxious. This is easier said then done. I was finally diagnosed with Liver Adenomatosis. I have multiple liver adenomas. In April I had a liver resection at the University of Florida in Gainesville. They removed 80% of my liver and I was back at work 6 weeks later. I will be monitored for the rest of my life. Sorry for going on about myself. I want to reassure you. I live in Florida. I would be glad to share my experiences with you as you move along this journey. Give yourself a hug! You will find many stories on this site of women who have weathered the same storm. It gave me such great comfort to know I was not alone. Take care.

Thank you so much for your reply - it helps me to know that someone heard me!! I see that you may have joined just to reply to me, since your post count is only 1! I am happy to hear that you seem to be doing well. I am on the west coast by Tampa, so Shands is definitely accessible for me. Thank you again for sharing your story - sounds very similar (right down to the dates!) - - -

Your situation sounds very similar to my best friend's case. She just got her CT scan results which showed several masses on her liver. She has been referred to a GI specialist but the appointment is 3 weeks away. She is losing her mind. What did you find out about your masses on your liver? Thanks for your help!

Well, Wildcat, this is totally unbelievable, but my masses turned out to be cancerous. In fact, I ended up being diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer - the masses on my liver were cancerous metastatsis. I am doing ok for now, but it is very scary and whole new ballgame. I was only 30 when diagnosed. I hope and pray your friend has benign results.

I am so sorry to hear that!! How scary! Are you in remission now? My best friend has a very similar story to you. she is 34 and has a grapefruit size mass in her abdomen (was found by feeling from the outside). Ct scan shows several masses on her liver. She was referred to a GI specialist but her appointment is not for 3 weeks. Was the breast cancer related to the liver mass? Again, so sorry but so glad you are doing better!!
