Liver panel - abnormal levels - thoughts?

There seem to be a lot of liver experts (well, at least a lot of people with experience with liver problems) on this board. I've been doing some reading here to get more insight into my mom's condition, and I'm hoping that if I tell her story, someone may have some helpful insight.

My mom went to the dr last week (Tuesday) because she had upper and lower GI pain for about 2 weeks, and it was getting worse not better. She was very weak and had no appetite. The dr. prescribed Zantac and Carafate. Within 48 hours of starting the meds, her skin and eyes had a yellow appearance, and her urine was bright yellow. Later in the week her pain was subsiding, but because of the yellow skin & eyes she went back to the dr on Friday and they drew some blood.

Today she got the results that her levels were abnormal:
AST 96
ALT 250
AP 207
Direct Bili .81

It's a week since she first went to the dr and was prescribed the meds; her pain is gone, and the yellowing is gone, but she is still feeling weak and just not herself. She is going to have an ultrasound done soon, and also another blood test.

I was hoping to find a thread that talked about how Zantac or Carafate can cause elevated liver enzymes. It seemed so suspicious that the yellowing started right after she started the meds. But she is still taking the meds and the yellowing is gone.

She doesn't have a terribly unhealthy lifestyle; she smokes, has an occasional beer or two (but not often), is just slightly overweight, walks regularly, has an 11 year old daughter that keeps her on her toes, not to mention her grandbaby, my 1.5 year old.

I would greatly appreciate any insight and love to 'hear' your thoughts. Thanks.

Re: Liver panel - abnormal levels - thoughts?

I too have elevated liver enzymes. My first test they were only slightly elevated. Second test they went up.

ALT - 80
AST - 29
GGT - 147

In April it felt like my liver was swollen. I have been to see my Family Dr and the issue with my liver feeling swollen has pretty much gone away. I seem to have bouts of diarrah and right side pain and a little back pain. Sometimes it feels like my digestive tract is out of wack. I asked the Dr. why are they elevated and she stated it could be fatty liver, hepititus.

I dont drink alot. Since April I had not had anything to drink. Last Friday I was feeling really good and drank 2 beers. I think it may have upset my liver though cause on Saturday the pain in my liver was back.

She wants me to have an abdominal Ultra sound done. I am wondering if anyone has ever had the issue with their liver enzymes and can I get your input. I am a complete worry wort about medical issues.

I am 40 years old and my weight is 117lbs and i'm 5'5". Can anyone give me their input please

Be thankful that you had those tests done. Get the ultrasound done too. The chances are that you have a fatty liver and that can usually be fixed by changes in diet and intensive exercise.
It's an unfortunate fact that liver disease is not limited to alchohol abuse and it is often symptom free untill it gets to an advanced stage. Find out now before it gets any worse.

My alt is 60 and I have fatty liver - My liver is slightly swollen and causes pain sometimes. I have no gallbladder which makes it worse. I also feel like my digestive tract is so out of control. I don't drink at all but I have 70 lbs to lose so I exercise everyday and eat plan food (no salt, no fat, no sugar) I just saw a liver specialist and he had me do a complete liver panel and that was scary because I never had 6 vials of blood taken out of me in my life. He is testing me for everything. I am 42 but having anxiety over the whole issue. I am afraid they will find some more things wrong with me. I don't want to end up with hepititus. Tell me more about your symptoms.

Re: Liver panel - abnormal levels - thoughts?

I looked some stuff up on the internet yesterday...I know I should not do this. My symptons almost mimic Gallbladder issues (stones etc). I do have pain under my right rib cage into my back and even between the shoulder blades and yes in my abdominal area too. Yesterday I actually had some nausea/quizziness when I woke up. I actually ate some toast and felt better. I seem to have pains in the early morning that can last either all day or a few hours. By all day I mean until about 6-7pm. I will still have some pain but not as intense. This will go on for a day and then the next day I will have some tenderness, but not major pains. It seems if I eat lets say a cheeseburger fries and 2 beers the next morning I have pains (fatty foods). I do go from a soft stool to diarreah and they are lighter in color than usual. I do not have diarreah all day. In the after noons I can feel constipated, gas issues and after eating dinner I can sometimes feel bloated. Not sure what is actually going on with me. It feels like a combination of intestinal issues, liver and gallbladder. I have my ultrasound on Tuesday morning.

If you have fatty liver you shouldn't be eating a cheeseburger and fries - I would not drink alcohol and lay off the fatty foods till you get tested.

Re: Liver function test
I have liver issues also. Losing weight, keeping off of sugar, alcohol, sugar alcohol (splenda & equal) tylenol plus taking SAM-e, Schisandra, picrorhiza, and Milk Thistle has made all my liver test return to normal. Also no processed fruits and fruit juices, no drugs most drugs are processed by the liver and damage the liver. I take advil it has never cause me a liver problem. I have been studying this for 20 years. I have found very few doctors that understand liver problems even at liver transplant hospitals. Several people I know has used this routine and it has worked at least five other people. You can check *****, the four items I mention above are totally safe. Zantac will cause liver damage read the papers that come with this useless drug.

Re: Liver panel - abnormal levels - thoughts?

The problems you are having are from Zantac. look for side affects from Zantac. This is in my opinion a useless and dangerous drug.

Your liver produces digestive enzymes and it appears to be weak and not providing enough enzymes. For digestive problems I take acidopholis beads from CVS, WalGreens or Puritan Pride. I find the beads are the best, Liquid would be fine. Read my previous listing.

I also find that Sugar and sugar alcohol (splenda and equal)(sweet n Low is OK) and alcohol and processed fruits and fruit juices are the five worst items for the liver as for as food is concerned of course drug are even worse. Someone said Cheeseburger and fries were bad of course they are not as good as green fresh raw or steamed veggie but burger are no way near as bad as sugar and the other things I mention above.

You may have what I Have lack of digestive enzymes. It causes the same symptom. Since your liver is suppose to produce digestive enzymes and it is weak, it is more than likely not producing enough. I use digestive enzymes from Wal-Mart or Puritan Pride and acidopholis beads from CVS or Dr. David Williams It is all natural with no side effects.

You are probably right because my liver is so overworked and can't digest the food fast enough or normally like it should. I do notice after I eat like several hours later I will burp and I can taste my lunch.
