I was diagnosed with FNH two years ago. I had one 4 cm mass on my right lobe of my liver. I finally had it checked again, it had grown to 7 cm. and possibly a small one. They are now telling me to stop taking the birth control. I am on birth control for health reasons. Cysts on ovaries and very heavy long, and frequent periods. I am very concerned about what I should be doing? Has anyone else had these problems?
I have what they think is focal nodular hyperplasia. As far as i've been told, they don't think birth control and focal nodular hyperplasia cause issues. The one that is hormone related (birth control) is hepatic adonema. Have they diagnosed FNH for sure?
My mass was found June 2011 and here I am ten months later with a diagnosis of about 90 percent chance it is FNH. I get an MRI in October. I have already had a CT scan and two ultrasounds. I did go off the pill just to experiment if it has shrunk or not. So far it has stayed pretty much the same so that is a good indication that it is FNH.
I've known about my lump for just over 6 months now. I've been taking the pill for 5 years now and my doctor told me the pill does not make FNH grow and that it was just a myth, as far as I'm aware its just adonema that is affected by the pill. I've had two MRI's and both showed mine was still the same size and I continued to take the pill.
Thank you for the info. I got a second opinion. We decided to switch the Bc. Just in hope it will stop growing. I just had another MRI and it has gotten bigger since January. I have pain everyday. But they are not going to do anything. They probably not even check it again. I will have to live with the pain I have.
I also have a FNH at about 9cm. I'm having surgery to remove it in 3 weeks. I asked if I had to be taking off of birth control and was told no. FNH should not be affected by birth control. Good news for me!
My most recent ultrasound is showing that my mass has shrunk a tiny bit in the past year. Not sure if this is correct, or it is reading error, or it is because I have lost some weight. Guess we will find out when I get my MRI in October. I hope it is a FNH and not a adenoma

Hi Janderson. I'm the same, they won't do anything with mine and I have pain every day. I'm currently on prescription pain killers and sleeping tablets, also anti depressants. However mine appears to have stopped growing. If yours is still growing I think they should be doing MRI's at least every six months! Did they give you a reason why they aren't going to do anything? Are you taking any pain killers.
They said they will not check it anymore because of the type of tumor it is. It will not kill me so there is no reason to check it anymore. I am not currently taking any pain meds. It is a very localized pain. It is pushing against my ribs. They know it had grown in the last six months. Did you see a gastro or a hepatogist?
Wow, I'm surprised your doctors are not going to be watching your mass. Mine was 2cm when first discovered and 6 years later it is 9cm. Since mine is clearly growing, I was told that it is best to take it out soon. Mine takes over the left side of my liver and I guess it is an easier surgery then if it starts to move over to the right. They also said they do not want to wait for it to get bigger and need a liver transplant instead of just a resection. My pain and symptoms may or may not have to do with my FNH but if I plan on getting pregnant it may be an issue having it. Good luck! Hopefully yours will not grow any bigger.
Well good luck. Mine has grown 3 cm in two years. It had grown half a cm in six months. Mine is on my right lobe. I guess if I am still have the pain in about a year one of the docs may want to check it. I am just very frustrated with all of this. But good luck with all you are dealing with.
Hi all
I am new to this site so I hope I am posting in the right place!
Last year my doctor found a FNH in the left lobe of my liver. It was at that time around 2.8cm. I just got back the results today from my recent ultrasound and looks as though it is now at 3.5cm. I was wondering what is considered rapid growth? How much and how fast. Is 0.7 cm in 8 months rapid and if so has anyone else had this same situation.
My gyn has taken me off of all birth control until we know more about my liver which I'm pretty happy about since my husband and I want to start trying for a family in the next year. Just don't know if the FNH will grow even more if I do get pregnant?
Thank you!
Hello. I have had a few updates since I last posted. One my tumor is growing about a cm a year. It is to the point anymore growth the tumor will be removed. It will be a hard surgery since it is on my upper right lob. I have to wait a year for the MRI. I just don't know how I feel about all of the waiting.
I hope everyone else is finding answers and figuring out what is best for them.
I also finally got answers.
In October 2012 I finally got my MRI done at a liver specialist. They are certain it is FNH and say nothing else has to be done. Mine has not really changed in the past two years. They gave me the go ahead and everything to have a baby.
Not sure if things are different or not here in Canada but once I get pregnant I will probably put a post about my experience on here.
