Question dull pain in right side... liver pain or something else?

Hello Everyone,

So for a while I've had this pain in my right side under my rib cage, i have no clue as to what it could be other than my liver, bet your wonder why i am thinking its my liver, well that's because Ive been a binge drinker for a while now,I've cut down a lot since then now i only drink on Saturdays. i don't only get this pain when i drink its there when im not drinking but not as noticeable. I've searched the internet over and over drove myself crazy thinking oh no i could have Cirrhosis or some type of liver disease, also thought maybe my liver is inflamed or enlarged. ive done the self examination and i really don't feel anything and it really dont hurt. if i was feeling something what would it feel like?! anyways i dont really have any symptoms besides upper right abdominal pain but it dont feel like its right under my rib its sometimes feels like its lower than right under my rib, im also having back pain in my lower back. ive been looking for other symptoms but i don't have any i am not yellow what would be the first symptom?! anyways here are all the test i've had done so far. .. Upper GI Endoscopy which they found mild gastrits and told me my liver looked good which was done last summer which wasnt long ago so im wonder if i could have shot my liver all the hell that quickly? also i've had catscan for pancreas kidneys liver gallerbladder. twice an everything came back normal but i did use the emergency room for this.because i went there with upper right side abdominal pain. so they did liver funtion test, cbc, and im not sure what else. they sent me home with pain killers an i was fine then later on the pain comes back so here i go to my gp an tell her she orders to see the test i had done from the emergency room an also says everything looks fine an then orders a upper adominal ultrasound attention on gallbladder which everything come back normal and she said she didn't know what was causing this so then i went to my gastroligst with this pain she orders a hidascan which everything showed up fine so ive had just about every test you can have besides a liver biospy. so my question is with all these test coming back normal is it saft to say i dont have anything wrong with my liver or should i go back to the doctor with this pain?! i been thinking about going back to the er with this pain. anybody have any idea what this could be ive also resently went the er an they felt around my stomach and where it was hurtting an said it was muscle spasums which scares me even more because ive never had these before an i read thats a sign of liver damage im so scared im only 28 i havent been drinking that long on and off since but not everyday all day i just go out on sats an drink with my boyfriend. so if anybody knows any more test i can go have done to make sure its not my liver or can give me any idea as to what else this could be i just keep checkin to see if its inlarged or inflammed but i dont know what im feeling for please any answers would be better than no answer, oh btw i also had my tubes tied not long ago i was wondering if this could have anything to do with the pain im having i also have black circles under my eyes an they said i was anemia i am taking iron pills for it somebody please help my worried mind.

Re: dull pain in right side. . .liver pain or something else.

It is unwise to mix alcohol and iron supplements, and most experts agree, it is simply unwise to take iron supplements in general unless you've had a blood test that shows you are in fact both anemic and low on iron. Anemia can result from other factors besides low iron, like B-12 or folate deficiency.

If you are low on iron, it is always better to get more iron by eating more beef or other meats than through supplementation.

When researchers want to damage a lab animals livers without chemicals so they can study liver disease, they feed them iron, alcohol, and polyunsaturated vegetable oils, and these animals end up with liver damage in a very short period of time when the diet is high on all three of these.

Polyunsaturated vegetable oils are what restaurants deep fry all their fries, taco shells, chicken and fish in. It is also found in margarine and salad dressing. Polyunsaturated vegetable oils go strait to the liver where alcohol is metabolized, and a metabolite of alcohol called "acetaldehyde" oxidizes this fat turning it rancid through a process called "lipid peroxidation", and this puts a lot of stress on the liver.

If you avoid anything that is cooked in a deep fryer, as well as margarine (use butter instead), and excess salad oils and do without the iron supplements; your liver can deal with moderate amounts of alcohol without too much stress. If you can't live without deep fried foods and iron supplements, you really need to limit your alcohol intake.

Try one of these options and see if you don't feel better in about a month's time.

Re: dull pain in right side. . .liver pain or something else.

Hi there,
I have had exactly the same problem as you for about 9 months now. I too was a binge drinker and ended up in hospital 9 months ago after a particularly bad binge. It was round about this time I started feeling the discomfort in my right side. I thought my liver was swollen at first, but tests showed it was all ok. Like you I then went and had every test my GP could give me, all clear. I have read a lot of stuff in various forums about this and two things are clear, it lasts a long time and noone knows what it is! It does tend to affect people who are under stress and often comes hand in hand with IBS. I think most likely mine is a tear from vomitting that will not heal. Apparently tears and strains around the rib cage take ages to heal as they only receive a third of the blood other areas get. But because we are active it never heals! I have tried vitamins, garlic tablets hot packs/ cold packs, dieting, not drinking, not exercising and sadly it still persists. If you do find anything to help please let me know... I am a pretty healthy 32 year old guy (apart from drinking and anxiety)!

Re: dull pain in right side... liver pain or something else?

I had the same exact pain a month ago, and had a pain in my upper right side abdoman that would radiate to my back. Had blood test done, urin test, CT scan of my entire abdoman, abdominal xray, and ultrasound of liver, pancreas, and galbladder. All test came back normal...They perscribed prilosec and a oral laxative. Nothing helped and I was convinced I was dying I was so uncomfortable, losing sleep, exhausted, and irritable every day, for weeks. Finally got relief after getting colon hydrotherapy I really recommend this, or maybe try an at home Enema you can buy at any pharmacy. No more pain finally and whats disturbing is that none of the doctors I saw recommended this to me it was so simple. Hope you feel better.

Re: dull pain in right side... liver pain or something else?

Don't know if you still battle with this pain since April, TatooAngel. I too have this. I tell people that it feels like an 'unreleaseable burp' (dull ache with a point on it). I've had my gall bladder out - so it can't be my gall bladder. I'm heading in next week for an ultrasound of the area to look for masses around the liver. I'm NOT a drinker at all. But I do favor lower carb/higher fat diets to help control my diabetes. They work WAY better than taking in the recommnded 300grams of Carbs a day. And for weight loss - which I battle with too. But without a gall bladder the liver has to work harder to digest fats. But my gall bladder's been out for over a year. Surely my liver's adjusted by now - and up until a few weeks ago this pain didn't exist.

Lately I've been using *********'s shake mix as a meal replacement for weight loss and it's gotten a lot worse. It was there BEFORE ********* - and is worse now. But their products are LOWER fat - and yet something seems to be triggering this pain to a worse level SINCE I've started the ********* shakes. Weird..

I will say that there's another VEEEERY common thing that gives the kind of pain in that area you're describing that most people don't know about. It's called COSTOCHONDRITIS. Simply put - inflammation of the rib tendons and ligaments.. As you press in, near your ribs on that side, can you make yourself 'flich' with pain? If so - it's more likely a muscular thing than an internal organ thing from what my doc and chiropractor have told me. Hope we both find our answers. It's really affecting the quality of my life right now.

Was your gastritis ever treated with medication for 4-6 weeks? If not, maybe it is that and it needs treated. Also, if you go for more tests have them check your amylase and lipase, 2 pancreatic enzymes.

This person has been to the doctor numerous times and has suspected that this is a liver problem. Please read the question before posting.

@Brdrcolliesrule: It says in the post that the person had an upper GI, so the doctor did check for ulcers.

It says right in the post that the person had an ultrasound and it was normal.

Unhappy Re: dull pain in right side... liver pain or something else?

i am experiencing the same thing. i thought for sure it was kidney stones though it does feel like my whole liver is enlarged. it gets worse at night when i lay down too. i had an ultrasound, blood, urine - results are all normal. having an mri saturday. i do have cysts on my liver that are benign but they are 'watching' them none the less. they just found them 6 months ago so they could have grown. i guess we'll find out from the mri...but if anyone has any other thoughts let me know. waiting to talk to the dr. directly. figure she still might want to do a ct scan or endoscope...i get it could still be an ulcer...had gall bladder removed last year so i know its not that.

Re: dull pain in right side... liver pain or something else?

I had pain in my right side for 14 years. Docs kept telling me it was IBS and all tests, scans, etc. came back normal. I hit rock bottom a year and a half ago with vomiting, weight loss, chronic nausea, abdominal pain that spread to under my sternum. After searching and traveling for tests, I was finally diagnosed with Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction. I had major surgery (transduodenal sphincteroplasty) in October and am doing much better--no pain, gaining weight back, minimal nausea. I have permanent problems, though, from going undiagnosed so long. The gold standard test for this is invasive--an ERCP w/manometry. Most docs don't want to do it because you can get a bad case of acute pancreatitis after, which is what happened to me. Also, though this disease can be proven by this test, there are doctors who don't believe it's a real disorder. Well, take it from someone who almost died quite a few times, SOD is real! And, the sphincteroplasty helped, so of course SOD is real. It's one of those things docs love to blame it on stress, mental issues, etc. Get the test if you even remotely think you have it. Don't wait. I have pancreas problems now because of it.

Re: dull pain in right side... liver pain or something else?

i have been reading about SOD. it sounds exactly like what i have. i had my gall bladder out last year but this is exactly the pain i was in before it was removed. i told the dr. i thought it had grown back because all the symptoms were back too...unfortunately all the tests came back normal so i am probably the type III person and it sounds like dr.s aren't very willing or able to treat people with this. they need to be specialists...i see her this thursday. i don't see that there is any special foods to avoid except fatty foods will trigger it just like gall bladder. did you find that anything else bothered you? also, i am urinating a lot. is this part of it? or is this maybe just something else going on that is happening at the same time. it threw my dr. off when i came in to see her thats why she initially thought kidneystones even though she's a gastroenterologist not a urologist...
