ultra sound shows liver mass

I went to the doctor about 45 days ago due to moderate pain in my upper right abdomen just below my rib cage. They told me to come back if the pain did not go away. Last week I woke up with severe pain and went to the doctor again. They gave me pain medication and scheduled an ultra sound with-in two days. They were thinking it was my gall bladder. My doctor called me the next day and told me the ultra sound showed a mass on my liver. He is scheduling a CAT Scan. Now I am waiting and trying not to think the worst. While looking for probabilities of liver cancer I found this site. Can anyone tell me what to expect?

Re: ultra sound shows liver mass

Hello my name is Candace, and I'm going though the same thing. I was diagnose with having three spots on my liver. I have the pain that you're having. I am on medication for this. I've had a CT Scan and MRI; on my abdomen there are times that I would have the tarry stools. Had a Colonoscopy done, they call this a Hemangioma; Liver Mass. I will be going in for a follow-up my doctor their telling me it's nothing to really worry about. They describe it as blood vessels they monitoring it one size is 6cm the other is 4cm and the last but least is 2cm. But their concern is that the 2cm is still growing and this is one that they are going to pay more close attention to. And yes I am worried but I feel that it is going to be okay.

Good Luck to you.....

Re: ultra sound shows liver mass

Your story is just like mine. I had slight upper right abdominal pain and was scheduled an ultra sound. From there I had a CT scan followed by more ultra sounds. I will be getting a MRI in October.

Good chance it will be a benign tumor. If you read through this section, you will find there are a lot of us. Some common ones are focal nodular hyperplasia, hepatic adenoma, or hemangioma.

I am mostly just familiar with the first two because that is what they are trying to diagnose me with. It has been a long year and still no definite answers. If it is a focal nodular hyperplasia they will most likely leave it. It is only an inch big and isn't giving me problems. If it is a hepatic adenoma they may want to remove it before I have a baby. I went off birth control a year ago to see what would happen.

Try not to worry too much. My doctor tried to reassure me that if it was cancer I would be showing a lot of signs. Also, cancer rarely develops in the liver it mostly spreads to the liver form another form of cancer.

Re: ultra sound shows liver mass

I am not a doctor but a person with liver disease and work with a local support group for people with liver problems.
From my small experience, I can say that I echo the above post that actual liver cancer is rare. It usually spreads into the liver from other organs and nodes or from an already damaged liver. So most of the time, it is not an out-of-the-blue surprise (meaning the person has a history).

Mass on the liver is common with most being minor or semi-minor. However knowledge of the liver by the person and a good doctor will usually keep the person in good health.

Your symptoms is more like a mass than cancer. Most of the people i have known with liver cancer really do not have acute pain. Most that had not already had cancer in another part of the body had hepatitis B and the liver was already damaged and the liver was already tender to the touch but no severe pain in the early stages.

If your doctor has not already ordered a blood test for tumor markers then, for peace of mind, ask for a AFP blood test level. This will tell the doctor if there is germ cell growth in the body which is usually in the liver with a AFP test.

If you do not have any form of hepatitis, have weight loss or jaundice then this novice person believes it is more a mass on the liver than cancer.
However ALWAYS check with your doctor(s)- and do not feel like you cannot get a second or third opinion from another specialist. Be informed is the best key for a person.
