Re: ultra sound shows liver mass
I am not a doctor but a person with liver disease and work with a local support group for people with liver problems.
From my small experience, I can say that I echo the above post that actual liver cancer is rare. It usually spreads into the liver from other organs and nodes or from an already damaged liver. So most of the time, it is not an out-of-the-blue surprise (meaning the person has a history).
Mass on the liver is common with most being minor or semi-minor. However knowledge of the liver by the person and a good doctor will usually keep the person in good health.
Your symptoms is more like a mass than cancer. Most of the people i have known with liver cancer really do not have acute pain. Most that had not already had cancer in another part of the body had hepatitis B and the liver was already damaged and the liver was already tender to the touch but no severe pain in the early stages.
If your doctor has not already ordered a blood test for tumor markers then, for peace of mind, ask for a AFP blood test level. This will tell the doctor if there is germ cell growth in the body which is usually in the liver with a AFP test.
If you do not have any form of hepatitis, have weight loss or jaundice then this novice person believes it is more a mass on the liver than cancer.
However ALWAYS check with your doctor(s)- and do not feel like you cannot get a second or third opinion from another specialist. Be informed is the best key for a person.
