recurring ascities

I have a 4 taps ranging from 4-6 litres in two&half months with another scheduled for next week. Been to a liver doctor, he said no hypertension of the portals in liver and slight chrosis. His thought was ovarian cancer but the taps are non malignant. I cant have a life, cant work, travel or be an active member of my family. I never was a hard as drinking but like many drank beer with friends. everyone seems to be in stop mod because salt and potassium levels are staying fine. I get blood test 3 times a week. I just started getting constipation but that may be the drugs. I am on spiroton andfurosemide but it is not helping. I have another visit with the liver doctor this week and dont even know what to ask anymore

Re: reaccuring ascities

There must be some reason for the cirrhosis, and I would wonder about a couple of things. Have you had a CT scan of abdomen? With ascites this significant, that is a must. Also, any history in family of hemochromatosis (excessive iron storage in liver). What do your liver enzymes look like? Also your serum albumin, a protein in blood, could be very low, and if so, may be causing some of fluid buildup. Replacing that protein with an IV albumin infusion periodically could help a lot, and is safer than just draining off the fluid repeatedly. Is your kidney function ok? Any heart failure or bad swelling in legs? The cause of this should be sought to treat the underlying problem. A second opinion may be worthwhile if you are not getting answers and a thorough work-up.

Re: reaccuring ascities

I had the abdomenal cat scan, which confirmed no significant damage. No one has done any genetic testing cause I only know my mom. Kidneys and Spleen show no swelling or problems. Gall bladder surface has been slightly damaged from ascities. Left leg started swelling in between tap 1 and 2 but I was huge and had gained 17 pounds. I have lost 30 pounds in 3 months from 120 to 92 but it has jumped to 107 from fluid. I dont know how you do second opinions in Canada.

Re: reaccuring ascities

The second opinion in Canada, I am not familiar with the process, but maybe someone from Canada can help. The hemochromatosis can be tested on the blood with a ferritin (stored iron in liver) and transferrin saturation test. Have they done tests for your pancreas? (amylase and lipase) Any heart tests done to figure out the cause for your ascites? It seems out of proportion to the "slight" cirrhosis on CT scan. I would press your Dr. to explain more and insist on seeing a liver specialist if you aren't already. In the meantime, please avoid all alcohol and Tylenol as both are toxic to liver and will likely worsen your condition.

Re: reaccuring ascities

Spent the last two days at appts, liver specialist is going to reissue request for a gyn/onc appt. Stating that weight loss is extreme and ascities is not parallel to any liver damage. They doubled my intake of spirton and Furosmide ? to 200mg and 80mg. Family doctor says we have to reinvestigate this is a cancer that has yet to be determined. I'm as big as a house after only 11 days and guess I will have to wait til Monday for a tap. I cant lift myself off the couch. Down to 90lbs with out stomach and right know running 108 with fluid. Everything still is wait and see, next spec. appt. isnt til Sept. Maybe I'll exploded by then. Thanks for advice

Re: recurring ascities

I am sorry you are so ill and I do hope they find something fixable with all your tests. I am surprised you are not in hospital. I hope you have adequate care at home and have a visiting nurse who comes by to see you between appointments.

Re: recurring ascities

I am very glad they gave you albumin, as that should help for a little while to keep the fluid from reforming as fast. They can repeat those infusions as needed.
