Exclamation Possible adenoma or fibrolamellar hepatocellular cancer

I started having attacks in my right side a few months ago they were horrible. The second time it happened I went to the hospital where they did a CT and an Ultrasound. They found a 6cm mass on the back side of my liver. They thought it was a hemangioma and that it was bleeding into itself. They scheduled me for an MRI. But from the time I was in the hospital to the 3 weeks later that I had the MRI I lost a good 20 pounds or so and have been sick all the time, I have a hard time keeping food down and have been tired all the time. I am in almost constant pain. I got my results and they are not sure if it is an adenoma or liver cancer. The doctor said that the mass has a strand going from it into my liver. Has anybody dealt with this before?

Hi, I had severe pain end of August, went to hospital with it where they did an ultrasound and found a 'liver mass'. I was then referred for an MRI, which said probably FNH 4x5x6 cm. I was then referred to a specialist liver unit where doc looked at MRI result and said he thinks it could be an adenoma and has scheduled me in for another MRI, but not until march next year. Meanwhile I am in pain which is sometimes severe and stabbing, other times dull and can feel like something trying to push out of my liver! I also had severe fatigue but that has gone for the most part, I now have a nearly constant headache and also my eyes are bloodshot! They did blood test but I never heard anything so hopefully that's good. My regular doc just says its nothing much, wait and see and meanwhile have a few Xanax! I have an appt for a diff doc tmw and hope to get her to find out blood test results and see if I can get an MRI quicker. I know how you feel, the pain is scary! Let me know how you are doing

Re: Possible adenoma or fibrolamellar hepatocellular cancer

I have stabbing pain there but my doctor said it was not from my liver tumor.
I found one small tumor last year 1 cm, just a spot. Then I had another 2 more MRI done (6 months apart) since I have hepatitis as well.
The last MRI only slight change of the tumor from 1 to 2 cm and found another change of color in another area in the liver but not developing to tumor yet. The result said either Adenoma vs FNH.
However, I had AFP blood work done which was in a normal range.

Have you had your AFP done? If it is a progressive cancer, it could cause AFP to rise abnormally. The fact that you are drastically becoming sick and losing a lot of weight is very serious. If it is cancer, I hope they can remove it.

I wish the imaging could give us a better and more definitive result of the type of tumors though.

Cheer for you!

Re: Possible adenoma or fibrolamellar hepatocellular cancer

Hi Tatt & burrows&irl, There are liver specialists that only do livers. Not a general gastroenterologists. My husb had a liver biopsy. Not sure what kind of dr you all are seeing or if a biopsy is even indicated for your problem. The liver specialists do transplants, and treat hepatitis c and diagnose and treat other liver conditions. Please find one or two for a second opinion. If you are waiting and getting sicker, that would make me scared. If you cant get to a liver specialist, in my opinion try an hematologist/oncologist as they diagnose if you have cancer as well as treat it. What kinds of drs are you seeing? Im so sorry that you are going thru this. Thank you, gmak

Re: Possible adenoma or fibrolamellar hepatocellular cancer

Dear Gmak,

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you have anyone (hepatologist) recommended in MD, DC area? I had liver biopsy done last year but only to find out about Hepatitis and/or Cirrhosis. I am seeing a GI doctor and being treated for Chronic Hepatitis as this point. The doctor who did biopsy told my doctor that
First, the tumor was too small
Second, not knowing the type of it
Therefore, he would not recommend having a biopsy on it.

Basically, my case is pretty stable. I have MRI and ultrasound annually.
I do not have pain in that area often at all.

Thank you
