Unhappy thick green phlegm, what is it?

my husband has been getting thick green phlegm up once a day .it is the consistency of blancmange it is so thick you could cut it with a knife.the doctor said perhaps it was snot running down the back of his throat, but i have never seen anything like it.he was put on strong antibiotics but they didnt touch it.he was also given an inhaler, bromide but that just makes him dizzy .he doesn't have a cough with it ,it just lodges in hie throat until he can cough it out.any ideas will be most welcome

Re: thick green phlegm, what is it?

The doctors can test the phlegm that he coughs up to see if there is an infection. I don't want this to sound gross but I used to have an issue with an area in my throat that would collect mucus and I would usually cough it up in the morning. I used to call it my "throat booger." That is what it seemed like. I have not had it in a few years. Maybe a humidifier would help his situation. Especially when he is asleep. Just put one in your room and see if that helps. Does he stay hydrated? Drinking more water would probably thin out the secrections.

Re: thick green phlegm, what is it?

He needs to see the Doctor again. If it is discolored it does mean infection so perhaps it was the wrong antibiotic. Did he see an ear, nose, throat Dr? If not he should. have him ask about sinus drainage either in office or at home. there are some kits available that are safe for home use. I would not use it unless the Dr. OK's it though if there is an infection. He needs to see a specialist.
