hard to take deep breath in the morning

Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, it hurts to take a breath any deeper than normal breathing. After a do it few times, i can finally expand my lungs enough and I am fine. There is a small cough involved every time I try to take a deeper breath. Otherwise my lungs are fine. Any thoughts?

Are you a smoker or do you have asthma?
