Pulmonary/Liver Nodules

Hi,

My Dad, just turned 63, has been having some abdominal discomfort that at first they thought was acid reflux. They did an endoscopy and a colonoscopy that came back negative. We actually thought it might be his gallbladder and his primary doc thinks it could be a hiatal hernia, but he had heart problems in the past so he wanted to have a CT scan done, which they did of his chest and abdomen.

It came back today that he has multiple lesions on both his liver and lungs. I don't know much more than that except he's going to see a pulmonary specialist. His primary doc told him some people just have them and from what I gather on here, that can be the case. He has absolutely no other symptoms of either lung or liver cancer, he's not losing weight, his appetite isn't affected, he's not coughing blood, he's not jaundiced, he's not short of breath, etc. Chest x-ray came back negative a month ago, which I know isn't always conclusive. He hasn't smoked in over 25 years and doesn't drink much, either.

I've read through all the posts here but I was just wondering if anyone has ever had lesions found in both areas. The first thought was obviously cancer until I started reading on here and even one of their friends had nodules in his lungs and his heart that turned out to be nothing. I'm pushing for them to do a PET scan on him just to make sure, because I'm sure they're going to want to do the "wait and see" type of approach, even though I really think this is something he's probably had his whole life and just never knew about it. Least that's what I have to tell myself right now, anyway. At worst if it is cancer, at least they found it early enough to maybe do something about it.

Re: Pulmonary/Liver Nodules

I'm sorry that your dad is going through so much right now. I don't know how to answer your questions precisely. It seems like monitoring is the method of choice for these type of things unless there are signs that point to other things. You may try to look up liver nodules and see what comes up. I don't have nodules on my liver, but my ct scan showed a small nodule on my thyroid. My endoscopy showed a polyp in my esophagus which was biopsied as well as my stomach as it was inflamed and red...still waiting on the results of that. The GI doc said anywhere from 3-5 days, and my procedure was done last Wednesday. The doctor didn't seem too concerned about the GI lesion, so I am not alarmed, but I will call on Wednesday if they haven't let me know by then.

If your dad's Primary Care Physician seems to think things are okay, try to go with that. He probably knows your father's health history and if there is cause for alarm. It's hard to wait, but it seems to be the norm.

I hope all is well and that the outcome is good.

Re: Pulmonary/Liver Nodules

Thanks for the response...there was a cancellation so he actually gets into the pulmonologist tomorrow afternoon to see what they have to say. Let me know what your biopsy comes back with. Take care.

Re: Pulmonary/Liver Nodules

It's good that they could get your dad in sooner. I hope that the Pulmonogist can provide you with some answers and possibly run some tests to put your mind at ease.

My stomach biopsy came back benign. The GI doctor said my stomach was red and inflamed...thought I might have the H. Pylori Bacteria, but the biopsy said no. Soo, as for the Pulmonary Doctor crediting the lung stuff to my stomach, well, it's not fitting into that box. Maybe it's a pat answer that's given for all lung nodules...I don't know. I think my stomach is doing flips because of all the stress I'm going through at this time in my life.

Let us know what the doctor says and if he is planning on doing tests, which ones he has in mind. I'm curious and hope for you and your dad that all is well.

Re: Pulmonary/Liver Nodules

the thing is I believe that cancers main symptom is PAIN, lots of it, my mom had the same things and no other syptoms aswell, They even did surgery for things that were not correct, because if they donít think its cancer, they think itís this, or thatÖ but when it finally got big enough to find out it was cancer, it was too late. She had so many wrong diagnoses.

see if you dad can change his diet, there are many cancer fighting foods he can eat, just in case, cancer is not something you want to wait to get dignosed with. He should still get tests to make sure itís not something else, find out what it is.. but if he never gets a diagnoses, I would fight it like its cancer, and be strict and hard. Another idea is seeing a Chinese doctor, Chinese medicine has been around for 5000 years, a lot longer then our country has and I believe they are a lot better and can cure serious illness unlike some doctors. But that may be an uncomfortable road to take for some people. For myself, that is what I would do.

Only trusted the doctors, even though they miss diagnosed her how many times. but that is all I can give, is my advice.

Re: Pulmonary/Liver Nodules

Wow...your dad's story sounds exactly like what's happening to me.

I was sick with a cold my 11 yr old son brought home about 2 months ago. I had a lingering non-productive cough and some fatigue, so went to my GP for a physical. (I'm nearly 47, so thought it was time.)

My bloodwork all came back very good, with only a slight elevation in my liver enzymes. He sent me for a chest xray for my cough. The xray came back with 20 lung nodules scattered throughout both lungs. He set me up for a CT scan and needle biopsy this next Monday, but the hospital called today and said I needed a preliminary CT scan before the biopsy. That was at 12:30pm today. At 1:45, my Dr called and said that the CT scan showed mulitple nodules in my liver too. So now, I have to have a liver biopsy instead of the lung biopsy. First thing that came to mind was cancer. But I have no symptoms synonomous with cancer. So why am I still petrified??

BTW...how is your dad? Has he seen the Pulmonologist yet?

Re: Pulmonary/Liver Nodules

Miyu,

Can you tell me more about the Chinese Medicine? I am very interested in finding out more about this. Also, where and how would you find a doctor that practices this medicine?

Thanks!

Deb
