| Re: Help: How to Extubate Respirator
HI , I am very sorry about your father.
I work in a cath lab ( where they do angiograms).
They have to puncture the artery to introduce the catheters that travel to the heart and subsequently the coronary arteries, inject contrast ( dye) to visualized the arteries to ascertain if they need to be stented (angioplasty ) or bypass surgery. They do this as your father had a heart attack.
There are risks with any procedure, and with your father's age, the risk is higher. We quote 1/500-1000 for any adverse event ( ie MI, stroke, death).
Bleeding post procedure is common, because a major artery is punctured being the femerol in your dad's case , I am assuming. Some bleeds do require transfusions
The doctors are doing everything they can for your father. What you need to do now is have a heart to heart with you family, his doctors and look at prognosis at this time. What does your dad want ? Would he want to be kept alive on a ventilator ? Who has power of attorney for his care? Does he have a Do Not Rescuscitate order?
The family can make decisions on behalf of a loved one who cannot make their own decisions. I know this is hard.
Again , I am very sorry about your dad
