Re: why am i coughing up hard white chunks

I just googled it....apparently its tonsil stones...you can look into it if it really bothers you....i copy and pasted this though:

Tonsil Stones are irregularly shaped, whitish/yellow, foul-smelling globs of mucous and bacteria that get caught in the back of the throat. They form in the tonsil crypts which are simply small pockets or divots that appear in everyones tonsils. The scientific name for these white globs is tonsilloliths.

Tonsil Stones (tonsilloliths) are caused by an accumulation of sulfur-producing bacteria and debris that become lodged in the tonsils. This debris (which can include mucous from post nasal drip) putrifies in the back of your throat, and collects in the tonsil crypts .

Re: why am i coughing up hard white chunks

The soft yellow "stinky" things you refer to are most likely tonsil stones, but the hard, white calcified things sound more like broncholiths--literally stones that form in the bronchi. They are generally harmless and no one is entirely sure why they develop, but they can be associated with certain illnesses. Adults in our patient group, who have a disorder called primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), get recurrent broncholiths (broncholithiasis) and also sometimes have calcified stones drop from their sinuses and ears into their mouths, which can be pretty alarming. It doesn't appear that the formation of these stones is an indication that the underlying disorder is any worse. At least in PCD, they appear to be more of a nuisance than anything else.
