Black sputum

26 yr old male suffering from rapid weight loss, extreme exhaustion, significant chest pain and has black studded sputum x 9 mths.

Chest X ray, CT scan of sinuses & chest are negative. Bronchoscopy is negative.

He has seen 9 doctors from every specialty and was hospitalized for 3 days, but no one has been able to diagnose his problem. His condition is slowly deteriorating and we are desperate for information.

Re: Black sputum

its good of your ct scan is negative. It eliminates the potential of lung cancer if i am not mistaken. I too have that kind of sputum. Black/brown studded. According to my specialist he says that it is the stain from my lungs as i was a smoker. I am awaiting for 2 more weeks, probably i will be doing a ct scan. I have a growth at the back of my ear. I read that it is lympth node behind the ear. But doctors say that there is no lympth nodes there.

Re: Black sputum

Thanks so much for all your replies!

He was a smoker about 10 years ago, but only for maybe 2 years. He has had many, many blood tests (metabolic panels, immune system antibodies, etc.) and the only thing that was out of the norm was his thyroid (they've since given him meds for that) and something called his IGE level. The norm for that is supposed to be under 114 and his was over 1,700.

In January this will have been going on for one full year and we're no closer to an answer now than we were. At least the lung wash ruled out mold/fungus, bacteria, TB or cancer. We're out of options and money.

Re: Black sputum

Lack of money comes with being ill and tough.
Black sputum I have never heard of but, I know red blood is closer to the outer body and the deeper in, blood comes from is black. I know black can be passed in faeces.
Hospitals would do the most tests and do not forget one day we can have tests and they can be clear and the next day something is found so do not feel all is well yet.
You have to be vigilant at all times but, I find answers quicker in hospitals although the last few years I have had a great young lady GP who is awesome at diagnosing.
From vomitting for a few months I had a top right lung lobe off on 28.10.2008 and lymph glands under my arm area out as a preventative.
I never smoked so this is why lung cancer is so deadly.
Found too late in most cases, I am so blessed but, it does not even mean I will live. I have to have chemo this month starting for six months so, time will tell.
Good luck hey.

Re: Black sputum

Hi, I'm sorry to find this thread as late as I have but I was doing some quick reading and apparently IgE are the antibodies found in the lungs, skin, and mucous membranes.

So since he had a low IgE I'm thinking this could possibly have caused the black sputum, where before the antibodies would kill off anything that wasn't supposed to be there...

Low IgE counts are often indicators of cancer, but I'm hoping this isn't the case with the OP.
