Shortness of breath at rest

I am pretty sure I have been in this particular sub-forum before, but for those who do not remember me from forever ago...I have been dealing with undiagnosed breathing problems for over a year.

These terrible issues began out of nowhere, with mild severity, chest pain and the occasional heart palpitations. The pain and peculiar heartbeat stopped and, within the last four or five months, my breathing got slightly - but noticeably - worse. It is still my only symptom, and thus far I have ruled out the following as a cause: asthma, hyothyroidism, collapsed lung, and embolism. I think I can also safely rule out COPD since I have learned albuterol is used for emergency treatments of that condition and albuterol does absolutely nothing for me. I have also had an EKG done, but I never found out if it was at all abnormal since the lady who did the test didn't mention anything about the result being bad.

Okay, now that I have blabbed on about my odd issue, I would like to ask this of the folks who suffer breathing issues...what might cause shortness of breath at rest?

Yes, I get short of breath when I exert myself beyond walking. I also, for some reason, feel more breathless when out in cold weather. But why at rest? I have batted around the possibility of having anxiety, but even when I am completely mellow or happy, I am still short of breath. The only difference is when I'm happy, I don't notice it as much.

I am very concerned this could be something not picked up by my tests thus far, like an underlying heart problem or severely clogged arteries. It doesn't help that my only symptom is something that covers an extremely broad range of conditions, ranging from harmless to fatal.

Could my weight play a factor? I'm not enormous, but I am definitely on the low end of obese...at 5' 7" and usually between 180 and 195 pounds. I don't exercise beyond walking because I can't breathe, but my diet isn't the horribly unhealthy type often associated with overweight.

Has anyone here ever dealt with basically a constant state of breathlessness?

Re: Shortness of breath at rest

Hi there,

Obviously your problem sounds very serious. Why haven't you been referred to a lung doctor? If what you have listed are the only things that have been done to rule out the reason for SOB, then there are plenty more things to rule out!

Random question: have you ever in the past used any medications to suppress your appetite?

Re: Shortness of breath at rest

I haven't been referred to a lung doctor because my primary care doctor is an idiot who thinks I just need to take albuterol forever and everything will be just dandy (he became a neurologist a couple months ago - we should be very scared). His reasoning was that if it wasn't asthma, it *must* be anxiety.

The stuff that was done (like a CT scan and an X-ray) were done to rule out things that would kill me, like pnuemothorax or embolism. I have no idea if a heart problem would show up in either of those.

I am going to try and see someone when I go back home for the holidays...I hate the local hospitals because they are horribly expensive, so I'm going to my old small-town hospital to see if a doctor will refer me to a specialist.

Doing my own research, I think my shortness of breath could possibly be the result of three things...pre-hypertension, anemia, or anxiety. None of which will kill me right now. It really does not help that I have one symptom...I kind of wish I had some more so tests could be narrowed down.

I have never used any type of medication to suppress my appetite.

I really do hope your still active on these boards. I am a 30 year old male and have EXACTLY the same symptoms as you describe and I have had EXACTLY the same tests done and my GP has prescribed EXACTLY the same medication (salbutamol/albuterol, that does absolutely nothing)

I am constantly short of breath / felling like I need oxygen and have to force deep breaths in before I feel releived. My symptoms also started of with heart palpitations (out of nowhere and they often knocked me off my feet) which went and left me with shortness of breath especially at rest, and its my only symptom. I can excercise with the best of them and almost feel better after a few miles on the treadmill/bike, excercise does not make my condition worse. Blood oxygen = excellent, Lung Capacity = Excellent, Chest X-rays = clean as a whistle, weight = 12.5st and stable (male, 30, 6ft1).

Only other notable mediacal conditions is I have a bit of IBS (set off by spicy food i.e. jalepenos) and a large lipoma on my back, right at the bottom of my left lung / diaphragm border that gives me the occasional irratence if I lie on it)

Apart from that I can be considered quite healthy.

Did you ever find out what the problem was?
