TERRIFIED... Pulmonary hypertension - Lung & Respiratory Disorders / COPD Message Board

Hi, I just had an Echo done and the results show trace mitral & tricuspid insufficiency and mild pulmonary hypertension. The nurse who called with the results said my pressure is 37. Everything else shows normal. My doctor wants me to monitor my blood pressure for a week and to have a sleep study done. I looked up pulmonary hypertension on the internet and it looks like a death sentence. I am just beside myself with fear. I am 31 years old and overweight. I smoked for 15 years, but quit a month ago. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea about 5 years ago and subsequently had my tonsils removed. The doctor said my soft palate might need to be shaved back as well, but did not want to do that unless he had to and felt that a tonsilectomy would correct the situation. I never went back for a repeat sleep study after the tonsilectomy. So, is there anyone out there who can shed some light on things for me? How accurate are echo results when it comes to pulmonary hypertension? I know the definitive results would come from a heart cath. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated as I am an emotional mess and ready to plan my funeral.

Hi yes and echo can tell forsure you should see your Doctor ad soon as you can. I have had p h since Feb. 2010 and it isnt always a death threat it can not really be treated but i had a 2nd opinion and my Dr. is great says to just live each day to its fullest !!!!!!!!!! My mother lived with this for years and passed away at 83 from other causes. She had pulmonary fibrosis as well and hade been on coumadin for decades. It can be controlled if you are very compliant. Find a doctor who specializes in this - my mother did - and it can really make a difference.

I have ph and am starting a drug call letairis for it. It is very expensive and needs monitored closely. Pulmonary hypertension is not as bad as it used to be. I was dx with it 3 years ago and just am starting meds for it. Don't dwell to much and live life to the fullest.

I'm appreciating all the encouraging stories from folks who are getting good treatment.

Cinderella, I am feeling terrified and fatalistic too, and I haven't even had my new tests yet. Just freaked because a 2-year-old echo showed indications, and my doc never followed up. Now I feel that I may be having symptoms, so I'm beside myself with worry. How has your diagnosis and treatment turned out, assuming that you're still following this old thread?
