I need advice... I have a pretty large sized pleural effusion on my right lung and moderate on my left. They have done every test they can think of, and everything has come back normal... I've had multiple chest x-rays, 2 CT scans, 3 thoracentesis' to test the fluid (fluid was determined exudative) and 1 small biopsy of the lining of the lung and nothing, it's all come back normal. I've had the fluid drained 3 times and it keeps coming back. The last time was about 1 1/2 litres of fluid and after about a week I could feel it had filled up quite a bit again. I have no pain when breathing... my only symptom is shortness of breath... I don't have any other symptom at all other than this fluid that keeps accumulating!!
Right now my pulmonary doc is saying we either still wait it out and see if it eventually goes away (which is not his first choice), start me on prednisone or have a thoroscopy surgery so they can look at the lining with a camera and take a larger biopsy... which he says will rule out lymphoma... although he says is such a SMALL chance of having anyway...
Anyone give me any insight as to why this effusion keeps coming back... has anyone ever gone through this. Can I assume it's just inflammation of the lung lining??? HELP!
BTW, I'm a 33 year old otherwise healthy woman who smokes.
