Hi Rose,
I had a V.A.T.s procedure last year to confirm whether or not I had Sarcoidosis. After the biopsy, I was in the hospital for three days but I think that many people go home after one day. For me, the worst pain was caused by the chest tube, but I think that it is different for everyone. Before I had the surgery, I read accounts from other people who had the procedure, and most people said that the chest tube was not a problem. So, don't psyche yourself up about it 'cause it may not bother you too much. Also, the tube does not generally stay in your chest for very long after the surgery. If it does cause you a lot of pain, ask for more medication- the staff is there to help you. Once I was released from the hospital, I was not allowed to work or drive for two weeks. I stayed with my mom and she took good care of me. You will need someone to take care of you so make arrangements before your surgery! I was in pain but it was bearable because of the medication. Make sure you drink a lot of fluids and eat fiber rich foods because the pain meds. can cause constipation. Do not push yourself! If you do, you will not heal as quickly. I felt healed three to four months after the procedure. I have one large scar on my back and two very small ones on my right side but I think they look much better now then they did last year. I hope that this has answered some of your questions. Take care and try not to work yourself up about it-you'll do fine!
