Intercostal muscle or pleurisy?
I am 44, non-smoker, usually healthy, athletic (triathlete). I would like to hear from anyone who has gone through this or has any medical information. I had a viral infection for about a week. After all symptoms were gone except for a chesty cought, I began light running and biking on stationary bike. On Sunday night (Feb 7) got a pain in my side which my husband thought was intercostal muscle. Monday, Tuesday did very slow jogs and rode stationary bike. No increase in pain. Wednesday, Feb 10, I did 5 minute swim then had to get out because of increasing pain. That night it got worse and I had trouble breathing and was in tears. Still no fever but the pain/breath problems was frightening.
The next a.m. (Thursday) I saw a doctor, who ordered a chest xray. She said it showed "slight" pneumonia. She gave me Azythromycin. It's now Sunday (2/14) and my breathing is easy but have a mucousy-sounding cough every couple hours, and I still have pain in my left side, under the breast, especially on inhaling and leaning on that side, and lifting my left arm.
The doctor had no idea the cause of the pain, thought it was related to the pneumonia or could be intercostal. It seems to be decreasing very very gradually if at all.
Any advice is appreciated as to how long this takes to heal much appreciated.
