I have had a problem for seven years. I wake up at night choking. I usually have to spit up mucus before I can sleep. Recently I have been spitting up this foul smelling mucus all day. It smells very bad. My breath is always bad. Nothing can help my breath. I have tried everything over the last seven years (dentist, x-rays etc). A doctor once told me it might be some sort of reverse heartburn where mucus is coming from the stomach. It could also be some sort of a nasal drip.
What concerns me is that when I spit up the mucus I think it is coming from somewhere deep like my lungs. I have had a history of asthma and take inhalers. Initially at night I must sleep on my sides. I cannot sleep on my back or I will choke. After a few hours of sleep I can sleep on my back.
I was wondering if anyone knew any information as to what this could be. I do not cough.
