I have had COPD for twenty years, and I was a heavy smoker. I am now 67, not on O2, and have a semi-active life. You should make your father smoke outside the house. Your mother should practise breathing from the diaphram, from the lower lung fields, several times a day. God Bless, and good luck. Peggy

So you were 47 when you were diagnosed? What stage were you originally diagnosed with? I am 47 and was diagnosed with early stage emphysema just over a year ago. I haven't had a cigarette since I found out. I try to exercise 5 times per week on my treadmill - 20-30 minutes. I am overweight and know that I need to lose weight to help my breathing. How often have you had spirometry tests? It's great to know that you are 20 years with COPD and still going strong - very encouraging!! Keep up the good work!

Hi my name is Kandie I'll be 45 soon ,I have COPD had been smoking for thirty years,I was told I had COPD when I was 39,and my breathing has been getting worse for the last five years, it got so bad that I couldn't sleep because I was gasping for air,so I went back to my Doctors and took me straight to the ER and I was put in the hospital for a week and now I'm on Oxygen 24/7 and stopped smoking and can't do much with out getting out of breath, and I'm only 44 and have a 9 year old and a 5 year old and I can't even go out side and play game with my children,I can't even walk from room to room in my house I get out of breath,if I didn't have the Oxygen I would pass out and I don't want to tell you what the Doctor said about that, I'll put it this was its not good,
So please tell your Mother to what the Doctor tells her and take her medication like the doctor tells her and please no smoking in the house at all .

Some people have had positive results (although slight, but definitely positive) with taking co-enzyme Q. Also, RAW fresh pineapple on an empty stomach may help a little (daily for a month). There is another supplement called MSM which shows an increase in a COPD patient's stamina after a month of supplementation (1g a day).
Hi, I am 72 years old and I was diagnosed with emphysema in 2001. My sister was diagnosed around the same time and she passed in 2006. My pulmonary spec. told me not to worry about the stages, some people live longer than others in the last stage. This is a tricky disease. I am doing quite well just, can't do everything that a used to do. I try to excercise as much as I can. I am taking Spiriva and Symbicort and Ventolin as a rescue inhaler.

If you have COPD I don't think they will try guess how long you will live unless you are really far advanced. I would get treatment from a lung specialist and take any medicine they prescribe. Also she should avoid any lung irritants or people who are sick, get flu shots every year. She may not want you easy off oven cleaner etc things with strong fumes. Her lungs are already damaged and she should be careful the rest of her life to avoid irritants that would make her worse. Stay out of extreme cold to etc. I do hope she gets at least another 20+ yrs as well as the other person who posted. If she smokes please, she needs to stop.
