does botox work for vocal cord dysfunction

My 17 year old daughter, Chelsea, was diagnosed with vocal cord dysfunction in October 2010. She will go weeks where she has episodes every day and then weeks with absolutely no episodes. She is currently battling an episode that has lasted more than 50 hours. When she is asleep she breaths normally but when she stirs in her sleep or wakes up, the cords close again.

We were fortunate to have a local doctor (Dr. Joseph Soto) who diagnosed Chelsea only a few days after the onset of her symptoms. However, despite numerous medications and working with a speech therapist, we have been unable to resolve Chelsea's condition.

We are now at the point where we are considering a botox treatment. I'm curious if anyone has used this method, and if so, what was your experience with this option?

Re: does botox work for vocal cord dysfunction

have they tried a relaxant in the valium family larazapam etc if my wife starts an episode she'll take a small dose and it relaxes the muscles otherwise we go to nyc every 3 months for botox ,it softens her voice for 3-4 weeks. it doesn't sound like your daughter has it constant whereas once my wife's botox wears out it gets bad and will end up in the hospital

Re: does botox work for vocal cord dysfunction

Yes, we have been given valium at the ER. On occassion it will help, but we have not found anything that has consistently been effective.

My daughter has been to the chiropractor for the past two days because I've read that some have found relief to the VCD through chiropractic care. So far, we have not seen any results. She has not been able to breathe normally for more than four days now.

How quickly did your wife find relief after the botox injections?
