Lingering pneumonia?

I was diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs 2/4/11. I was on two rounds of antibiotics and two rounds of steroids. Had 6 chest xrays. I missed a week of work and felt like I was dying. My xray on 3/4 was ot clear although I had no symptoms. So doc suggested one more xray 1st week of April. I feel completely back to normal and have resumed 4 hours of karate a week. I have had a runny nose and cough still but thought it was allergies. I got my xray yesterday. They called with results today and it is still NOT clear! I am told to go for a CT scan. I am 41 in relatively good health and can't believe whatever this is won't go away. Has anyone else ever had this type of experience?

My CT scan was ok - no masses or anything but still cloudy. They said it was scarring and they could not see more pneumonia. I had a chronic cough for about a year. I went to another doctor who put me on an Alvesco inhaler. I was on that for six months and it finally cleared up. I have bad allergies which they think slowed my healing. Allergy season was starting just as I was getting over my pneumonia.

I also have been coughing since the end of March 2012 and three x-rays going for CAT scan this Thursday, July 5. they're just concerned why the fluid is still there. very scared to tell me I have lung cancer. I do take medicine that help an inhaler and nose spray. Glad everything worked out

Re: Lingering pneumonia?

That is basically the same situation I had. They couldn't hear fluid but I had 5 X-rays and all still showed pneumonia. They were concerned about lung cancer for me as well. But CT scan showed lungs were clear but scarred. Hope it is the same for you.

Re: Lingering pneumonia?

It lasted until November so about 8 months. I started the inhalers about 6 months into it. It dramatically reduced 2 weeks into the inhaler though. After two months of coughing, my dad even asked his doctor who said it was not that unusual to be coughing several months after pneumonia.

Re: Lingering pneumonia?

Scarring in the lungs happens for a reason, and the underlying cause should be sought. I would highly recommend you see a pulmonologist and take your xrays and CT scan with you (not just the reports). Radiology can put them on a CD for you. There are a number of inflammatory conditions (chronic) that can cause scarring, called pulmonary fibrosis, and if the underlying condition isn't treated it can get progressively worse. Please follow up to find out why it is there and what can be done to prevent progression of it.
