asthma and allergies? Can anyone provide any suggestions please?

Hi, this started about july 18th.

-It started with: a throat tickle/dryness & became a sore throat. Fatigue like you have when you have a cold/flu.

-Turned to: sore throat diminished over time, but then developed a cough & this weird feeling in my chest

-There were NO: fever, chills or runny nose

-First doctor visit: he said he didnt want to give antibiotics right away
-Second doctor visit: he said allergies & asthma (given inhalers) (I have a history of childhood asthma)

-Since I have been given the inhalers, I noticed the cough improved a lot, and went to the doctors afterwards for more follow ups, he listened to my back & said it was clearing up but keep the inhalers in case the cough comes back. I also asked for a blood test, but I didnt get called back since Im assuming it was ok.

-I get worried when it comes to health issues, so I went to a clinic for rapid insti hiv test, it was negative.

-Since this whole thing started, I noticed my chest hasnt felt the same since, and I have been spitting up phlegm sometimes, usually after waking up.

-Any thoughts or ideas? Can this be something other than allergies & asthma? Are there certain tests that I can do to confirm this?

I suspect your asthma has come back. If so, it might take a while to settle back down, maybe not until after the end of allergy season.

I would see a specialist, either allergist or pulmonologist. You can get tested for allergies, and you can also have your lung function checked.

In the meanwhile, you can try taking antihistamines. What inhalers were you given?

hi, thank you for your reply. I was given ventolin and advair.

By antihistamines, do you mean medications such as reactine/claritin? (I was thinking about this before, but the doctor didnt suggest it)

I was thinking of asking to get tested for allergies, do you know if you can do allergy testing by means of blood tests? Or would you have to get scratch testing done? (It would take a while to get an appointment with an allergist, just wondering if the family doctor can do blood tests instead) Thank you.

Ventolin and Advair is a good combination. The Advair should be used every day, the Ventolin only when you feel you need it.

Antihistamines would be Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra, etc.

You CAN test for allergies through blood tests, and for food allergies, blood tests are the best way, but for things like pollen, the scratch test is a lot more accurate. Make an appointment with an allergist now and see what happens down the line.

If you do have allergies, ask about allergy shots (desensitization.) I've been on them since June last year. Right about exactly 1 year after I started, my allergies started getting better, and my asthma is WAY better.

Scared, you could have a simple viral infection. but certainly asthma on its own, would not just create a "flair up". I have astma and simple bugs can make my chest very tight and yet like you no cold etc.
The inhaler will help your breathing when your airways close up so use it when needed. So really i wouldnt be to concerned. Just keep warm, drink plenty of water and warm drinks ( helps loosen the chest )
Do you smoke by any chance?
PS, just thought, air freshners or body spray, have you had any new ones as they can certainly course a problem. Just remebered as im looking at one ive stopped using as that did effect my chest?

Actually, Apollo123, it can. Last year I had a four-month-long asthma flare that was only caused by allergies! I went to the doctor quite a few times, at no point did I have any symptoms suggesting infection.

Some people have asthma that mainly acts up when they have an infection. For me, it's seasonal allergies or things like smoke or cold weather.

Hiya Jane, you misread my post i think? As i said asthma on its "own" which would indicate that somthing "other" like you say as smoke, cold allergy or in my case an infection would present the recourse. Just edited my post so it would read easyer to save any confusion so thank you for that. :)
Best regards

PS, i hope the Hurricane dosnt effect you guys to much, fingers crossed for you all..
