Hi my mum is 89 years old, about 2 weeks ago had another exacerbation, now bed bound, oxygen 24 hours, docs said 2-4 days to live. (She has pulmonary Fibrosis as well as the COPD). But she has exceeded that, she is on morphine and lorazapam, has lots of mucus on her chest, barely 5 stone now, and has days where we think it will be the end. Then all of sudden she will be more lively and want something to eat and drink. The family are in turmoil trying to cope with the rollercoaster of this awful disease, could any one advise me how long this can go on for please?

Sorry to here about your mother. My mom has Copd to, but no quite at that stage yet.
Its the question that gets asked to the doctors all the time and even they dont have a devinative answer. A lot of it is will power and desire to continue. I guess as they have given a short time scale then just enjoy as much time as you can.
Im sorry i cannot offer more detail.. Take care

My mom had lung cancer and sadly enough they just gave her more and more morphine til'she went in her sleep,im so sorry it hurts but thats what morphine does it slows the breathing down and they pass away from it,my mom did so i pray they take yours off the drug, enjoy her while you can god bless you and yours,
