Question Acute silicosis detection, xray or CT scan

A 21 year old friend works in a plant that manufactures ceramic plates and is surrounded by very fine dust. There are times when the ventilation system cannot clean the air and none of the employees wear masks. Even though he showers after work on sight, he comes home covered in dust leaving a black trail throughout the house. He has complained of breathing pain in chest. Is a CT scan the only way to detect acute silicosis. Should he find another job? I'm worried this company is taking advantage of employees who are lucky to have a job (even though OSHA visits on occasion) and don't want him to get silicosis.
