Fluid in Lungs, Excessive Coughing

Hey folks. Trying to help my mother out here. She is 63, and has got a plethora of health problems. Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, water retention, reduced kidney function, etc.

The water retention is quite severe, and has resulted in very puffy feet and ankles. She takes pills for this but they don't appear to be doing much of anything. The kidneys are not in good shape.

The latest issue is that she has developed a terrible cough. Went to the doctor and they are unsure if it's pneumonia, or fluid in the lungs related to congestive heart failure. She will have to get an x-ray on Thursday (the place is not open on Wednesdays) and it may take until Monday before she can get back in to see the doctor. They gave her a strong anti-biotic in the short term (just 6 pills).

She hasn't really slept much at all the last couple of nights due to the cough. Is there anything she can do at home to reduce the coughing? It is really persistent and I have searched the web looking for home remedies, but haven't really found much of anything. There was a suggestion for steam inhalation, but I am unsure if that would be useful here or not.

Any thoughts? Just trying to help her reduce the suffering from this constant coughing in the short-term. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Re: Fluid in Lungs, Excessive Coughing

She will be most comfortable sleeping propped up on several pillows, a wedge type pillow, or in a recliner chair. Lying flat will make the cough worse. Also she should avoid salt as it will cause further fluid retention. If she gets short of breath, she might benefit from some oxygen, which would have to be ordered by Dr. If this gets too bad, she could have to go in hospital to get it figured out as to what it is and get the fluid out with strong diuretics and watch her kidney function. She sounds pretty sick and I would not hesitate to take her to ER if things worsen.
