Ear Problems

Does anyone with SLE have problems with their ears? I have eustachian tube dysfunction. I have tried nose spray, decongestants, antihistamine... and steroid shots. None of which help for long.

Re: Ear Problems

Hi & welcome. As weather fronts approach (rain or snow), I always get a pain & fatigue "hit", but starting a few years ago, now my sinuses also become congested and I feel ear pressure. Do you see any weather (barometric) pattern to your ear pressure? (FYI, congestion etc. with weather fronts happens to a lot of people, not just people with lupus. I was surprised to read that recently.)

I read that Eustachian tube dysfunction can also occur due to allergies or air pollution, and that the best approach is twice-daily nasal flushing. But I'd probably ask my ENT and/or rheum about that before trying. You'd want to do it properly---with approved sterile solution, etc. I hope others add more. Let us know what happens, OK?

Re: Ear Problems

It probably is allergies, but I didn't have problems before. I do nose spray and it helps. May just be getting old.

Thanks,

ccc

Re: Ear Problems

ccc, my problem didn't hit until I was [ahem ] older. Same with two friends, both in my age bracket. At first I ascribed it to lupus, too, but that didn't really make sense, since I'd had some symptoms of lupus since early adolescence, decades before the on/off congested sinuses. My friend laughed, said her husband & she had been fine until post-50 and that LOTS of people have this (which I browsed for & confirmed on "straight medical" sites). So if your problem has a clear barometric pattern, that's what I'd suspect... and you could ask your ENT to comment & make suggestions. Happy New Year!
