Question lupus urticaria

Has anyone ever heard of lupus urticaria? I came upon this in my lupus book and I swear, it's what I have. It's supposedly a rare form of lupus. I already know I have systemic lupus, but I break out in extremely itchy welts and hives. All I have to do is lightly scratch my skin and BOOM, they appear like wildfire. I called my rheumy (which is so out of character for me) and asked to be tested for this. I guess it doesn't matter if I do have it because the treatment is antihistamines and I can't take it as I go into grand mal seizures. But I'd like to know for sure what's causing these horrendous hives. I'm awaiting results of the bloodwork. Any else have these itching episodes?

Hey you!

I have heard of this form of Lupus, but I don't have it. Are your blood complement components low? If they are then I bet that you have this from looking at your symptoms! Not only can they treat it with antihistamines, they treat it with antiserotonin drugs & steroids. Your blood complements are your C3 C4, Deficiency of certain complement molecules (especially C2 and C4) in Lupus. I hope that you can get your doctor to test your blood complements to see what they are doing. If they are deficient, it is probable that you have this! Good thing it is treatable Take care!!

Hey Dana,
I've been having trouble posting, not sure what's going on. Now it seems to be going through. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for responding to my post. My doctor did complete bloodwork, including the tests you mentioned. Will know the results in about two weeks, they send it to California. It's tough not being able to use antihistamines, I've been using tubes of cortaid and buckets of ice to get relief. Good to know it can be treated with steroids.
