Is Lupus the only auto immune disorder that causes hives/rashes?

Do any other auto immune diseases cause hives? I am 32 and have never ever had hives in my life, no allergies or problems with the sun until yesterday...got hives from being in the sun tanning.

Re: Is Lupus the only auto immune disorder that causes hives/rashes?

Hives are the immunes system response. So it's not specific to Lupus but is specific to something that is making your body respond to some kind of irritant.

Hives can come on because of allergic reactions, heat, cold, pressure, all kinds of things. The most common is poison ivy and such irritants.

So getting hives doesn't mean you have Lupus per se. But if your body is manifesting hives chronically without an allergic reaction it's time to see your doc about whether it's over reacting (the immune system) or not and what disease is the root cause.

Yes, I realize hives can come from other things but do hives also occur in other auto immune disorders was my question. MS, Scleroderma, ect. Thanks.

I have never gotten hives in my life and have no allergies. I used to lay out all the time or tanning bed with no problems until yesterday....1st time out this spring laying out.

Re: Is Lupus the only auto immune disorder that causes hives/rashes?

Abbey32, There are also foods that are common triggers for hives: strawberries are a classic. People can eat them for years without any problems, then BOOM. Happened to my husband several years ago. He sprouted almost 100 biggies in a matter of several hours.

You could google for "urticaria" (hives).

Sunlight and certain autoimmunes don't mix well, as I'm sure you've been reading: lupus, MS, RA, etc.

Good luck with your skin problem. I hope you find the cause quickly.
