No more tunnel vision

Ok..my doctor today mentioned possible a connective tissue disease. I'm not so sure though. The ONLY symptom I have of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus and so on so forth..is the stiffy and swollen joints. Can anything else in the entire world cause this? ANA is positive..but that's not concrete evidence. I was diagnosed with herpes a while back..could that have anything to do with this? I'm starting on that Plaquil, and they gave me a shot of depo something or other.
I'm paranoid to start taking all this stuff..because what if it starts making it worse. What if in the long run I really do develop Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. What if it it's something simple and all these drugs screw me up. Can Plaquil have any long term effect..or just if it it works it works, if not then whatever.
I still blame all this on stress. What I went through two months ago, the average person will never experience in a lifetime. ANd this started two weeks after what happened (my mother was murdered). Does it sound reasonable to say that hopefully one day my body will start accepting and functioning again, and this will go into remission and go away. I'm a healthy, strong female, and there is noone in my entire family to ever even have symptoms of this!
Doctors make me sick..they are tunnel vision! They never look anywhere else. Allergies, Stress, weather, anything. But I guess that's there job too.
I believe that everyone has these "things" in their body, and it depends if it wants to "break out" or not. Mine did, and I know it will get better. It just has too.

Re: No more tunnel vision

Dear Winger.

First I want to say that losing your mother to a murderer has to be just about the most horrible thing a human being can experience. I read your note and my eyes just welled up & over. Please accept my condolences, to you and to your family.

As for times of enormous stress & how they affect people, yes, absolutely, I've seen people who erupt in all sorts of physical ways. My own symptoms hit a new level during a time of great personal loss. But I'd had all sorts of signs and symptoms on & off; and I'd suspected for years that I had some unnamed malady of some sort. And I'd been in the sun a lot mroe than at any point in my adult life, which cannot have helped.

Anyway... Is there any chance at all that there were *other things* on your bloodwork BEYOND a positive ANA that caused your dr. to prescribe Plaquenil? e.g., positive rheumatoid factor; an autoantibody; or depressed "serum complement" levels? You are legally entitled to ask for and receive copies of your labs. And you could also call and ask point-blank why the Plaquenil, as you are certainly entitled to know the reason(s).

Plaquenil does not suppress the immune system; in contrast, the *other* stronger medications (steroids and immunosupressants) DO. A series of posts on this very question re: Plaquenil flew back & forth just in the last week or so. Look for the subject header to open it up and peruse the posts. If they don't address your concerns, just yell.

I hope you stay in touch with all of us here.

Sincerely,
Vee

Re: No more tunnel vision

I am so, so sorry about your mother.

It is known that stress can bring out something that was waiting to come out. I don't feel stress alone can cause joint pain, something needs to be underlying. I went through a very stressful time for the last 4 yrs with my marriage and I think it brought out my Lupus. Do you know the number of your ANA?
