Question about the malar rash

I have had the sort of butterfly rash on my face, at times worse than others. Has anyone had the rash on their face that was not only VERY bright red but VERY hot?? I had to use ice packs on my face to cool it down. I had this happen last evening and I know in my younger days I have had it once or twice. Of course when I was younger I didn't have a clue so really just ignored it.

Had our grandson yesterday morning and we went to the park, it is getting cold here and we needed jackets and it was cloudy. The sun finally came out right before noon, but I didn't think about sun exposure until this morning, the redness is still there just on my cheeks, I look like I have those clown red circle cheeks!

I did have sun protection and make-up on yesterday but no hat and this morning the worse side is the right and I was the passenger yesterday in the car. Of course last evening both sides were equally bad.

Anyway just wondering if you can have so much heat from a malar rash, I know it is not a sunburn? Just curious, thanks.

Re: Question about the malar rash

Yeah I get a rash like that ever so often, Mine is very small like dime size always under my right eye and it raises and my skin becomes very hot. My mom has been diagnosed with Lupus by three different dr.'s and I just found out. She said that this is a tell tail sign of lupus. I just used to ignore it to.

Re: Question about the malar rash

Thanks jeepbabe. It lasted about three days and has finally gone away. I'm back to the usual red with pin dots. Since I have been taking prednisone my face hasn't been as red or as bad. Except that last weekend it surprised me. Thanks for your input.

Re: Question about the malar rash

Hiya Glojer,

I have only just seen this post. Sorry I'm not on the ball at the moment. I was only thinking that I have the malar rash in one form or another i.e. very pronounced or a slight blush most of the time. The only time my face burns is when I have a flare, cold, infection or something like that coming on. It does also seem to burn when I get a bad headache, not a migraine a really bad thumper of a headache. Generally then when I feel unwell.

The red mottled rash on my outer palms - which all 4 of my lupus specialists have said is a typical lupus rash - alternates in colour the same but goes hot and sometimes itches even if I am feeling ok.

I must say none of my rashes on my face or hands are raised, they are smooth and part of my natural skin appearance.

Hope this helps and you are doing ok today.

Take care.

Re: Question about the malar rash

Thanks Golden, I had the bright red burning cheeks again last weekend, it is such a mystery. They weren't quite as hot, didn't need an ice pack. I will be going to my rhuemy next Tuesday will ask him. I also see a new rhuemy in early Nov. and will see what she has to say about it, actually what she has to say about all this stuff that is happening. This new rhuemy is much, much, closer to my home so I hope she turns out to be a good one.

I have had the raised red patches on my cheeks before but these were not raised they were just soooooo bright red and soooooo hot. I'll keep you posted.
