Ana Positive??

hello everyone, ive been suffering with fatigue and just a general ill feeling for a year or so. i had alot of bloodwork done wed cdc, liver function, thyroid ect.. the only abnormal test was the ana screening, it was positive?? i had the same test 4 months ago and it was negative? he suspected lupus but wasnt sure so he is sending me to a reumotolosist. i dont have any rash or pain anywhere. i do suffer from anxiety and some depression, i think the only reason i have that is the constant health worries.

Hi,
Sorry to hear that you've been feeling ill for such a long time. The ANA test is an indicator to a number of auto-immune diseases and not just lupus. It can also be positive in healthy people who are fit and active. It has also been known to turn positive due to a virus of some sort, so there are many reasons for it to be positive. I think it is good that you are seeing a rheumatologist because they will perform a series of other blood tests that will help confirm whatever problem you have. I hope you don't have lupus though. Its not a very pleasant thing to have. They will usually send you for some other blood tests such as an ESR (Sedimentation Rate) and CRP (C-Reactive Protein) which are both markers for inflammation but the latter is a more sensitive test. They will also probably test for other anti-bodies etc. I wish you the very best of luck, and hope that all goes well for you.

Take care, and keep us all informed on your progress.

Re: Ana Positive??

Hey thanks for your reply, now that you mention it i have ongoing EBV "mono" whats weird about it is it was present 2 years ago as well as todays results.my wife or child do not have it but somehow its staying active in me.could it be that mono which is a virus effect the ana test.

Hi,
No problem at all, more than happy to answer your questions. It is a possibility that your EBV "mono" could be causing your ANA to be positive, but still get it checked out to put your mind at rest that it isn't any other auto-immune condition. I hope everything goes well for you and you get well soon.

Take care,

Re: Ana Positive??

Hi,
I would continue with the tests as they will run other tests. You don't want to take chances with your health. I have mixed connective tissue disease (mixture of lupus, sclerodema etc) which I hope you don't have Lupus but keep up with the tests and follow up as they will be able to tell with the follow up tests. Let us know how you make out ( I have not been well since whooping cough bout in 1969)

Re: Ana Positive??

Hi. My EBV level was so high that local drs. toyed with it as being the primary cause of my feeling lousy. My other main oddities during those early years were photosensitive torso/upper arm rashes and B-12 anemia. My anti-Ro finally turned positive, but that took some years to happen (or to be caught).

I got a Dx of subacute cutaneous LE (SCLE) from a Manhattan rheumie (it's a "subset" of lupus). He told me that high EBV readings are seen in some lupus patients, but no one is sure why. But, also, that EBV is positive in most people, as it's the virus associated with mono, and almost all people have been exposed.

I've always wondered, but don't know: can EBV alone cause a positive ANA?

I think you're right to keep looking for answers. Good luck! Bye for now, Vee

Re: Ana Positive??

hi are you being treated for this? any improvment? dr's are having a hard time trying to figure this out because of a lack of symptoms to really put a name on it.i dont know how much longer i can work, ive seen so many dr's that come close but leave them with a empty pocket and no treatment plan.my boss does not understand, cant much blame him.the dr did tell me that my ebv readings were high?

Re: Ana Positive??

Hi. Nothing was prescribed for my EBV levels. And I don't know if my rheumie even bothers testing for it anymore. Plus, my understanding was (back in 1998) that there's nothing available per se to decrease EVB levels.

On the lupus front, Plaquenil has helped me a lot with photosensitivity, pain, etc., plus the anemia went away.

If I see anything EBV, I'll post again asap. Oh, FYI, there are links right above ("Resources" button, etc.) to help you find add'l info on all sorts of health-related issues. Take good care. Sincerely, Vee

Hi. There IS info available through the links the Board provides above. You may click "Resources" tab above, then MedLine Plus, then search for EVB. Bye, Vee

I'm curious how your appointment went the other day? I recently joined this board but have found it comforting knowing others care so much about what is going on.. I have SLE Lupus, Fibromyalgia and several other symptoms I like Veej have been on plaquenil 400mg a day for 4 years and it helps tremendously.. But I am also on pain meds, anti depressants (even though I am not depressed they say it works for fatigue and tiredness). recently my ana levels for Lupus were negative but they say it can have to do with medications, how your feeling, so blood work isnt always the most accurate.. You are your best judge of character when it comes to symptoms etc. I've also suffered with chronic sinus infections and chest infections, like what you are describing frequently getting mono. its just one of the symptoms that seems to come with the territory.. I do hope they don't find lupus in you but if they do at least you will know how to treat it.. Hang in there I know it's difficult to work I have had to go on disability several times so far from it.. But you just have to take one day at a time and try not to get frustrated.. It took me several visits to many hospitals to finally find specialists that I trust and like.. If your patient you too will find the best ones for you. No amount of money should detour you from getting the best medical help..

Good luck and keep us posted..
Andrea
