Re: What is the average age to be diagnosed with Lupus?
i don't know... I was diagnosed at 22... but I first started going to the doctor for symptoms when I was 17... and probably first started having symptoms at 15/16...
Re: What is the average age to be diagnosed with Lupus?
I think it is between 20 and 40. Although most people who were dxd in that age range probably showed symptoms much earlier. In my case, I had a lot of trouble from my early childhood on........which makes me wonder if they might be able to invent some kind of early childhood screening test for every child, that way if it was found that you likely had lupus or were very susceptible to developing it, diagnosis and treatment would come much earlier and sooner, eliminating a lot of damage
Re: What is the average age to be diagnosed with Lupus?
I was diagnosed at 23 though I had been having symptoms for a year before that. I have read and heard from my doctors that Lupus is a disease that effects women in their child bearing years. Of course, men get it too, but only 10% of lupus patients are male.
Re: What is the average age to be diagnosed with Lupus?
Dr. Wallace, in his excellent hardcover, says people have been Dx'ed anywhere from infacncy (neonatal lupus) to late 80's. But 80%, he says, are Dx'ed from 15 to 45.
But then there's the lag factor: I think I've read that many fulfill the "4 of 11" criteria for 3-4 years before finally being Dx'ed.
Re: What is the average age to be diagnosed with Lupus?
I was diagnosed at the age of 63, but like the others, had symptoms for years before that!! It was always, well it is stress, it's your nerves, you have a little arthritis, you have eczema, never any blood tests or concerns until I could hardly walk. Then he finally listened to me and sent me to a rheumatologist. Feel much better now.
