Re: Could you guys help me?

Hi Georgi,

The short answer is that it might be lupus and it might not. There are 11 criteria doctors generally use to diagnose lupus. You can find them at: www.lupusresearchinstitute.org/diagnosis.php. I myself never have had a rash (knock on wood), even tho I've been diagnosed with lupus for 3 yrs and have the marker for developing it. While only around 40% of people get the butterfly rash, around 75% do get skin rashes of some kind over the life of their disease. A positive ANA does not necessarily mean you have lupus because, sadly, it's just a nonspecific test for autoimmune stimulation. While a positive ANA is present in 95% of people with SLE, it is also present in other diseases (and, in fact, can be found in 30% of perfectly healthy people too). Your rheumatologist has to look at the whole picture in diagnosing you. Other diseases with similar symptoms (at least for a time) are Rheumatoid Arthritis, Scleroderma, Connective Tissue Disorder, and certain types of neurological diseases and cancers. The list goes on. What is your doctor telling you? Do you know if you were positive for anti-dsDNA or anti-Sm? Those are often ordered to help confirm an SLE diagnosis, altho they too are not failsafe as they aren't present in a majority of SLE patients.

When I was diagnosed, I had very similar symptoms to yours, altho my ANA was more than slightly high. It still took weeks for a final diagnosis (after years of having similar symptoms). I know how hard the indecision is. I hope it gets resolved soon so they can start treating whatever it is.

Re: Could you guys help me?

Mott gave a very good explanation. ANA is just the initial of the blood work that is done to help diagnosis although there is not one specific test. C3 and C4 (complements) a false positive syphlis test, Low WBC, Anemia, Low Platelets, anti DNS DNA, with symptoms of malor rash (not on everyone) sensitivity to the sun and to light, unexplained fevers, fatigue, joint pain with swelling and redness (most have this) Theses are just a few. hope this helps. It takes a long time for most people to get a genuine diagnosis for lupus because of the lack of any specific blood work. It is the combination of at least 4 of the 11 criteria over a long period of time. Best thing to do is take pictures of any rash, joint pain, redness or swelling and a daily journal. Than take it into your doc

Re: Could you guys help me?

FYI I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia 3 year ago. My blood tests have been coming back very strange lately and after doing some research i decided to see a new rheumatologist to discuss the possibility of lupus (my other rheumy blamed all my symptoms on fibro). I went today and he think that if i have fibro, then it is secondary to another autoimmune problem. he said that my symptoms and blood tests definitely point towards a 'lupus like disease'. he ran lots of blood work. Moral of the story, even after 3 years of severe symptoms, I still don't have a definite diagnosis. Hopefully the results of the new blood work will help my new rheumatologist diagnose me. Good luck.

Re: Could you guys help me?

Well. I just got back from my doctors appt. He is a rheumotolgist at Mayo. He gave me the diagnosis of Fibromyalgia.[I have heart issues as well] I can hardly believe it because I really never thought that Fibro could be this bad. I feel so yucky. To be honest, I really never thought that Fibromyalgia was a real disease. Until I got it
Boy, now I know just how bad those with fibro feel. I am sorry that I was so shallow about the whole thing.
