Does Lupus cause a rash on the back of the neck and shoulders?

I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 3 years ago. i feel like something is "different". Had alot of IBS problems, extreme fatigue, and then I got this really bad itchy sore rash on the back of my neck and on my shoulders. Wondering if I could have Lupus not Fibro or possibly both????

Re: Does Lupus cause a rash on the back of the neck and shoulders?

Kimmy, hi. I also had severe IBS-like problems & a raft of other things. Then I started getting targetlike nonscarring rashes on mu upper arms & back, about four times yearly. This went on for years, despite my seeing many dermies & other specialists.

In books & articles, we seem to mostly read about the butterfly rash & discoid (scarring) rashes. But there are others, I learned, such as acute widespread, subacute annular, subacute psoriasiform, bullous, etc.

Have you seen a dermatologist? If you do, seek one familiar with lupus rashes. My suburban dermies (many!) were so clueless! I finally took myself to a teaching hospital rheumie, who also sent me to a dermatopathologist for a final deep-punch biopsy. This specialist, unlike the previous ones, also did immunofluorescent stain tests that proved beyond all doubt that my rashes were lupus-specific.

My bloodwork also finally showed the anti-Ro autoantibody, but my ANA stayed negative, which happens in about 1/3 of the variant I was Dx'ed with, which is "subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus" (SCLE). I've been on Plaquenil since. FYI, people with anti-Ro are typically VERY photosensitive.

I hope something here helps. Give a yell anytime, OK? Best wishes, Vee (P.S. My IBS-like problems stopped on a dime after I started Plaquenil, after all that misery.)

Re: Does Lupus cause a rash on the back of the neck and shoulders?

WOW...good information! Makes me feel more hopeful...I live more in the country area of Washington and can't get into a doctor for 2 weeks! The only other option would be to drive into Seattle to see a specialist but I can't make that 45 minute drive on most days.
Did you ever have problems with kidney infections? About 6 months ago, I had a sudden onset of blood in my urine..or rather...just blood. I immediately went to the E.R. I had no fever and very little pain. The nurse could not believe the amount of blood, it didn't even look like urine. I told the E.R. doc about my fibro history, etc. They gave me an antibiotic, IV solutions and told me to go hope after the blood stopped. Now I am wondering if it had to do with possible Lupus????

One of the most common organs Lupus attacks is the kidneys. You should go see a rheumatologist as soon as you can. Check out The Lupus Book by Dr Daniel Wallace. He is one of the best Lupus specialists in the country and he throughly goes over kidney disease in the book. I read in his book the other night that it is really common for doctors to misdiagnose kidney problems related to Lupus as a bladder infection etc. I strongly recommend reading this book. I checked it out at my local library.

You validated my concerns. My gut was telling me it might not have been a kidney infection. I have an appointment with a new rheumatologist. Thanks for all your help. I am so thankful I found this website!

Re: Does Lupus cause a rash on the back of the neck and shoulders?

Kimmy, The kidney damage seen in lupus is typically described as "silent". So hopefully your recent episode was something else, for instance---

UTI's are common in people with lupus; I had beaucoup.

STONES can occur due to GI malabsorption (among other causes). I had those, too, including one total blockage (awful!). Stones can definitely cause visible blood in your urine.

CYSTITIS (pain, frequency & urgency *without* infection) is another possibility. I had it chronically. I'd go in, expecting to test positive for a UTI, yet often did not. My urologist considered doing the diagnostic test for interstitial cystitis (IC), which is also an autoimmune, but fortunately held off. (It's a tough test for which you have to be totally knocked out.)

Dr. Wallace's hardcover: I'm a huge fan, too. His book encouraged me to seek a better rheumie---best move I ever made! FYI, the third edition is the latest.

Let us know how you're doing when you have the time, OK? Wishing you good luck! Vee

Re: Does Lupus cause a rash on the back of the neck and shoulders?

Thanks for the additional info. I see a chiropractor today so wish me luck. I have used one in the past and it did help somewhat. I am getting discouraged by the fatigue I have. I am not sleeping at night as well. Arghh! I am willing to try just about anything at this point. Has anyone out there tried chiropractor or nutritional supplements?
