Lupus and weight gain question

Hi all, in the past few months I have gained about 15 lbs with no apparent reason! I have recently been diagnosed with Lupus but have not been put on any medications. Why am I gaining weight? I am not eating more...so frustrated.
Thanks,
Jan

Re: Lupus and weight gain question

I am in the process of being diagnosed with Lupus and I have had the exact same problem. 15 pounds since January and nothing different. I have it on my list of questions for when I go back...

Re: Lupus and weight gain question

Just the opposite for me - I've lost 30 lbs. I was really getting worried because I haven't changed my eating habits. I'm a junk-a-holic!! Guess this is just the way I'm going to be now, but that is okay, long as I stay away from another flare!! I am on Plaquenil and Tramadol and also Restaril.

Wow, I would love the weight loss aspect!!! How long have you been on the Plaquenil and have you had any trouble with it. I have read both good and bad...

Smile Re: Lupus and weight gain question

Hiya sophie,

As you said you had not been prescribed any medications to perhaps bring on the weight gain, then one of the thing causing this could be a lack of exercise. It follows that if you are in pain, then of course you will not feel able nor want to move about as much as you once did.

If you are able to do say a little more walking, hard as it may be, then this might be worthwhile and also help psychologically. The thing is when anything traumatic happens in our lives we obviously can get depressed - any major illness diagnosis causes such emotional upset that this needs to be looked into as well as the medications for the illness. Unfortunatly a lot of doctors people don't think of this but if you can discuss this with anyone then it might go a way into helping you with the weight gain issue.

Also when we get emotionally stressed, it makes us feel so bad and sometimes people turn to food as a comfort source - I am not saying you have of course - but just another idea of how you might have gained weight.

Hope this helps, take care
