I know that no one is a doctor on this form so any opinions are considered only that. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and possible Lupus recently. I went to the dentist and had a root canal today and didn't think to ask him if I needed an antibiotic afterwards.I haven't gotten far enough into how to dealing with the disease to think of asking questions like that. I plan to call the office and let them know in the morning. Do any of you ask for or receive an antibiotic when having things like that....Thank-you all so much you have been such a big support to me the last couple of months.

Sophie, I think usually your *doctor* is the one who decides if a prophylactic antibiotic is needed before dental work, not your dentist. Your dentist doesn't know your medical history as well as your doctor does.
I don't think having lupus or fibromyalgia is generally considered cause enough for an antibiotic. Mitral valve prolapse (a heart abnormality) is one possible reason, I think---but I don't know how many other reasons there are.
Above is based on my own experience & could easily be way off! But, good luck & take good care. Vee
Hi Sophie,
I agree that your physician would be the one to decide. This usually happens when you are on very strong immune suppression.
Good Luck!

Hi, just wanted to let you all know that I have MVP and my dentist said that giving antibiotics after a cleaning is no longer protocol but I don't know about root canal's. Definitely check with your doctor. Good luck. Sandra Dee

Sophie, I have always gotten an antibiotic when I've had dental work...even my cats do. The infection that could result from that procedure could spread through out your system. Be sure to get an antibiotic just to be on the safe side. No, I'm not a medical professional. Just someone who has had dental work and always received antibiotics.
Take care,
Sharon
I personally have to increase my steroids if I have any type of invasive dental work done.
ALso in some cases, as with me, if a patient has aps and needs blood thinnners such as aspirin, warfarin/coumadin and the like then the dentist would normally have to be very aware of this too as the INR needs to be in the range that is aceptable before doing any dental work.
Lots of things really should be looked at by your dentist and you must always tell him/her of the meds you are on and any medical conditions you have before proceeding with any work.
Take care,
goldenwings
