I know the pain can really get you down. However, I don't recommend putting anyting else in your body that isn't going to boost you up. mj is a depressant- the pain ALREADY has you there! :-)
From what I've read and from persona experience, pain meds aren't the answer. That's a paradox, I know cause its the pain that you are seeking relief from. However, its the inflammatory process that is causing the heat, pressure, swelling and, ultimately, the PAIN!!!! Once the Dr finds what'll work best for you the inflammation will begin to subside and satay down for a while. That's where the prednisone comes in. The side effects of long-term high dose are signficant. However, the rheumatologists job is to find an effective dose low enough to protect you from the noxious effects.
It'll be roller coaster ride for a while, but you'll begin to feel better real soon.
