Post I know the sun is our enemy...

Wondering if anyone else has had this experience... I cannot be out in the sun for more than a minute or two and I turn red and break out in rashes. It's gotten considerably worse since last year. With sunscreen, it prolongs the exposure time, but eventually the rashes and redness appear after a couple of days of sunning (ie on vacation).

BUT, I have a great tan nonetheless. I can tan in a tanning bed without a problem with rashes, redness or fatique, etc. My Rheumy thinks my tan is "from a can", one of those bronzing tanners but his nurse knows the truth - and she's befuddled by it.

Anyone else had this experience?

Maybe the fact that your tan is from a tanning bed is
effecting you but not enough to put you over the edge.
But when you finally go out into real sun light it
pushes you too far and starts a flare. I don't think a
tan is that important to risk a lupus flare. Just My
Lily White thoughts on the subject.

My thoughts too. For years I thought I had to have a tan, and now I could care less. For me the feeling good is more important than the looking good..hehe I use the tan from a can and it looks very natural on my arms and legs, so I am very happy to settle for that. I used to be able to tan in a bed and not be affected, but go outside and end up in bed for a couple of days...I don't know why it worked that way for me either..I do know I feel better when I am not tanning at all.
