Question Starting Imuran

Went to the rhuemie today and she thinks that I should start taking Imuran to calm the lupus down and hopefully help my kidneys. i am at 26% function. The nephrologist doesn't think it will do any good she said that it is just the progression of the disease and that Imuran won't help because of scar tissue. I kinda feel like she is giving up on me and I don't want to end up back on dialysis. I was on it for 8 months ten years ago. Is it worth trying? Also I am a little nrevous about the side effects of Imuran. Any feedback would be helpful.

Thanks,

Marsha

Re: Starting Imuran

Hope it's not too late to respond, but I just saw your post today. I've been on Imuran for several months now and it's helping with my symptoms. I don't have kidney problems (except for one short flare) but I've read that it's the drug of choice for helping control kidney/lupus problems. I agree that you need to see another doctor at this point. Kidney involvement is serious and even if your current doctor isn't really giving up on you, a second opinion is valuable, and if she is, a second opinion is vital.

Side effects I had are stomach issues, but eating a small tub of Activia every day stopped that problem. Be sure to start slowly and work your way up to your final dose if you do start Imuran.

Smile Re: Starting Imuran

I did start the imuran about a month ago and it seems to be going well. I go for labs tommarow. I am really tired though and don't know if it's from that or the anemia, haven't had a shot in about six weeks. The imuran does seem to have helped with the lesions. Just wish this flare would calm down. Having a kidney biopsy next friday as the kidneys are declining again, we decided it was a good idea to see if there is anything still there. The last one ten years ago said that they should not be working at all, but they have been until now.
Can only wait and see!:
