Post Possible Lupus?

I recently was referred to a dermatologist for a red spot right on the bridge of my nose. It is very small and is in exactly the spot where my glasses and sunglasses make contact with my skin. It’s been there for two or more years….I did not develop it until I started wearing glasses. Recently, I noticed another red spot, about the same size, on the side of the bridge of my nose….again, where my sunglasses come in contact with skin. My dermatologist scared the pants off me when she ordered blood tests for lupus and other collagen vascular diseases. Now I am freaking out! I have had occasional pain in my right hip, but thought it was the result of overuse at the gym or kickboxing. I am 32 years old and, until now, have been in good health with no family history of these kinds of problems. Does anyone have any similar experience of being diagnosed this way?

Nico-
Have you done any research on your own about Lupus? There are 11 diagnosing criteria - to have the diagnosis, you need to have at least 4 out of the 11 criteria - one of which is the bloodwork. If your only other complaint is the occasional joint pain, I'd say there's no need to freak out. If you go to lupus.org, you can read up on the symptoms.

It sounds like your dermatologist may just be covering his/her posterior or jumping the gun a bit. The traditional "lupus" rash is shaped like a butterfly over the bridge of your nose on both checks - it's a lot more significant than a bump or two. Another common symptom is sun sensitivity - do you break out in rashes/red spots even with sunscreen after even brief bouts of sun exposure? What about unusual or recurrent infections? Pneumonia or Pleurisy? The website will go through the other ones...

My gut instinct is that you have a problem other than lupus. Maybe a sensitivity even to the material your glasses frames are made of? Or the contact is making an irritation?

Good luck and keep us posted.
