Has anyone here had spinal surgery, at the L4/L5 level? I haven't had second opinion yet, which I want for sure, but my orthopedic dr is insisting I have surgery ASAP. He discounts the idea that lupus, sjogrens or the fact that I've been taking prednisone for several years could have any effect. This is all frightening me.
You don't say what is wrong with your back that it needs surgery.
I know with disc problems and pain I have read that they do a lot
of surgery that is not necessary. If I were you I would get a second opinion. Don't feel bad about getting one either. I got a second
opinion about surgery for my Mom. I didn't like the surgeon's
manner or how he didn't really want to hear about Mom's other health problems which I felt should be considered before jumping
into surgery. He had a good reputation but we went to another
Surgeon who was as sweet as could be and asked questions and
checked her out for I know at least 30 minutes. The other surgeon
couldn't get out the door fast enough and would have operated
the next week. This surgeon felt it was too risky to operate with
my Mom's other conditions unless it was a last resort. Boy,
am I glad we found him. The fact that your Dr. doesn't want
to take into consideration that you have Lupus is a bad sign. Also taking prednisone it can cause big time bone loss, that we know.
Even for a short time it can cause problems. I think your intuition
is telling you to get a second opinion too. Always follow your feelings. Dr's aren't Gods( even though some think they are LOL)
