Lump under arm

Please help me figure out what to do. April 2, my right underarm hurt....felt like muscle......I did work out the day before. Lump was still there so week later went to the gyno.....she felt it....wanted me to wait 2 menstral cycles and if it was still there......mammo and ultrasound.
After 1st period.....I freaked and said I cannot wait another month. 2 of my sisters had breast cancer, brother had lupus and hodgekins......./
Went and had a mammo and sono........apparently there is a large lymphnode attached to a muscle......(of course they thought it was strange and that they had never seen anything like it).....story of my life it seems.

Said its not attached to the breast...so it is not breast cancer.
Doc didn't seem to want to further investigate it...so when I went to my rheumy I mentioned it......he said
Did you see a surgeon? He said with Lupus and Sojerns we should check it out.....then he felt it and said lets just keep an eye on it.
But I am freaking out. Its almost been 2 months and I know the muscle does not hurt so why is the lump there? What is it?
I called gyno and they faxed report over to rheumy and I called them and they have not called me back yet.
Should I just get a copy of the report and go see the surgeon? Should I go see my reg doc? Should I let it alone? meanwhile I am silently freaking out.
My brothers hodgekins was diagnosed when he was 19 and he had a lump on his neck. He would have been 57 in October. He died in 2002 from lung cancer,,,,he did smoke but they said it was caused by the radiation he had 30 years before.
I just feel like I need this out of me. I really have not been feeling that great for the last few months,,,off and on....why is it there?
Why did it suddenly pop up?
What should I do?
What would you do?
Oh thanks so much for listening.

Kathy

Re: Lump under arm

hello Kathy
first take a breath ... then a **HUG** it will have to be gentle as i am currently having a muscle spasms on my left and of course the good ol athiritis is doing tricks in the other joints!
not sure if this will help but i came across a symptoms checklist - can email to you if you like - but point is that 'swollen lymph nodes' are a symptom on that list ... does lupus likes lymph nodes ??? did you say you or you sister has lupus?
if no cancer has been detected then PHEW but keep an eye on it - yes waiting is a muggs game but then before doing any radical, invasive etc treatments be absolutely sure ...
sorry to hear that you have a lot of 'experience' in the AI dept. (auto immune)
don't push yourself too hard! rest when you need to + never feel guilty about it!
always a ear/eye to listen/read when you need!
Hang in there!
A

Re: Lump under arm

4boys, sounds like someone needs to step up & be "lead dr." on this? When did your GYN fax the mammo & sonogram reports to rheumie? Were the reports also sent to your GP? Are your GP & rheumie in the same hospital system? Have they ever conferred before?

Like AngelMJ says, I've also read that swollen lymph nodes occur in lupus. Like you, I'd certainly want to rule out more serious possibilities, though!

I think I'd ask BOTH rheumie & GP point-blank who's the "lead dr.", to compel them to decide between themselves. (By notifying both, you're creating a paper trail & professional obligations.) Ask them what needs to be done to rule out Hodgkins & other serious lymph problems. This, one hopes, will compel "lead dr." to refer you to another specialist or himself to suggest further tests. You could write a single memo, addressed to both, containing contact info for both, so they can reach one another---and say you'd very much like a single set of marching orders from one of them.

That's probably what I'd do... something like that, anyway. Two months of uncertainty seems a lot, really, for something like this. Please let us know how you're doing, when you can. Sending my very best wishes, sincerely, Vee

Re: Lump under arm

Hi - thanks for responding. I have lupus - was DX in 1995. I have SLE, hashimotos, thyroid issues......plus my brother had hodgekins. I do know that swollen lymphnodes are very common in Lupus but this is a big one and under my arm for 2 whole months?
I just wonder why this lymphnode suddenly showed up and why is it still there?
Doc called yesterday - my home....I was not home. I left my cell # but he didn't call that #. Hopefully he will call today but it is Friday and he's probably on the golf course or on his yacht.....LOL! Thanks also Vee for responding. I am going to get the ball rolling with my GP too. I guess I really do need to know who the lead doctor is. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Kathy
