plaquenil side effects recurring

Why would the side effects of plaquenil recur after having a new prescription filled? Still taking the same amount.. I've taken it 1 1/2 mths, had a prescription filled a couple of days ago, and side effects are recurring, I don't understand that at all.

Re: plaquenil side effects recurring

Doesn't seem likely that it's the plaquenil that is causing the problem.

Re: plaquenil side effects recurring

Yes it is the plaquenil. First time I started taking it, I had an exasuration of my nerve problems, itching, and diarrhea - losing water and weight. I dropped 5 lbs when I first started taking it. Problems went away after maybe 10 days. Doctor give me a new prescription monday and I had it filled, Tuesday morning I took two, get the watery diarrhea back, still have it, have dropped 5 lbs again, and I've been itchy again.

I thought you said Plaquenil was your salvation. I don't think you've been on it long enough to get the full benefits from it. Hope things get better for you. I've been on it 5 1/2 yrs, it has worked great for me, but everyone is different.

Plaquenil is my miracle. I love it more than anything. It's gives me my energy back most of the time and helps my pain. I don't understand recurring side effects but I am willing to deal with it.

Re: plaquenil side effects recurring

You should definitely see your doctor if you've lost 7 pounds in less than a week. Something else is going on.

Re: plaquenil side effects recurring

It's the plaquenil causing watery diarrhea. Nothing else is wrong. Losing water from your bowel movements causes weight loss. I need the weight loss so it's not really a bad thing.

Re: plaquenil side effects recurring

Are you taking anything else? I actually had a problem taking Celexa and plaquenil at the same time in the morning. I had the same issue you're dealing with. The symptoms improved dramtically when I stopped taking those two drugs at the same time. You might look into drug interactions with plaquenil.

Take care

Re: plaquenil side effects recurring

I take plaquenil by itself and a little later take my Keflux and Nexium. I am also using Ibuprofen, Aspirin, and over the counter sleeping pills.

Re: plaquenil side effects recurring

I really am confused over this. I have lost a total of 8 1/2 lbs since last monday. The diarrhea stopped and I am still dropping the weight. But the weight loss didn't start until I refilled my new prescription for plaquenil. I've heard before that plaquenil causes weight loss. This is like wow though.

Re: plaquenil side effects recurring

Never, I'd question Keflex, because I think its #1 side effect is diarrhea, which can cause dehydration. You could call your dr. to verify and also review what signs to watch for.

As a small child, I was given massive antibiotics (don't even know why, it was so many years ago), and ended up in a children's hospital twice before the drs. there figured out they were causing my 105-plus fever and convulsions. Granted, that was decades ago, when strong sulfa antibiotics were common. But after that, my family doctor and parents were VERY careful to not give me antibiotics unless 100% necessary, as I don't seem to tolerate them well.

In my mid-20's, GI problems (NOT from antibiotics) reared up. They were so severe I'd end up in the hospital for intravenous rehydration. These episodes came & went for 25 years---awful! But after I started Plaquenil, none---and I mean that literally. So I'm extra careful about taking antibiotics or anything else that can bring on GI problems, as I think I'm one of those people who seem to be affected greatly.

I hope this gives you some new thoughts to discuss around with your doctor, and I hope you get squared away quickly. Good luck! from Vee
