Confirmed tick carried Lyme Disease ... what now?

Hello All,
Let me start by stating I have not been diagnosed with Lyme disease and am not ill so far as I know.

I discovered an embedded deer tick about 2 months ago which was attached for roughly 72 hours. I went to the hospital, had the tick removed and sent to our provincial public health lab in Toronto, ON. I received confirmation this week that the tick carried Lyme disease.

I was prescribed a 2 week course of Doxycycline (at my insistence) at that time. I am allergic to a Amoxicillin and Erythromycin. I did not tolerate the Doxy well (severe vomiting and diarrhea after 2 days of treatment). I went to my GP as I was unable to keep the Doxy down, at which time I was given anti-nausea meds which worked for a couple more days. The long and short of it is I only kept 4 days of antbiotic treatment down before I stopped taking the meds. I was told by the GP that doxy was my only treatment option.

I am now of course concerned that my antibiotic treatment may not have been sufficient to eradicate the bacteria. I am also concerned about undergoing another course of Doxy as the side effects render me completely housebound and severely ill.

I feel fine at this time and other than some fatigue which may have nothing to do with Lyme disease, I appear to have no symptoms.

I would greatly appreciate any advice and knowledge any members may have on my next steps and possible treatment options (if any).

Thanks

Re: Confirmed tick carried Lyme Disease...what now?

Many people have trouble taking doxy, often it's a herx reaction, which is good. You might try backing off a little with the dose. Some people find saltines help. But you really need to be seeing a Lyme specialist, an LLMD, who would know how to treat and with different abx. Were you also tested for co-infections? An LLMD (lyme literate doc) would also do this. Lyme is a serious and complex disease so you really do need someone schooled in the specialty. Most hospitals and regular docs or even infectious disease docs don't really understand lyme or how best to treat. You need to reach beyond your GP. There are many alternative protocols that address LD as well and that have proven very effective. I would definitely recommend you start doing your own research as it will make you better informed as to how to proceed, who to listen to in the medical community and who to steer away from. Don't wait, though, to start some therapy as the critters replicate monthly. Oil of Oregano extract is a natural abx and could be used in the interim.

All the best with this,

Tess

Re: Confirmed tick carried Lyme Disease...what now?

Hello Tess,
Thanks for the reply. I did a bit of research on herx and I would absolutely agree that that is likely what happened with the doxy. I am limited as to who treats me unfortunately as I am in the Canadian military so we have our own medical system. I have been in contact with some people in my area who are being treated for Chronic Lyme Disease and will get some information about which doctors are treating them. As far as I can tell a number of them travel to NY for treatment and consultation which isn't an option for me.

My intention right now is to get as much information as I can about the most efficacious treatment of acute Lyme (and other co-infections) and ensure that is the course my MD takes. I am not sure if I have co-infections, I'm not sure if the tick was even tested for them as I haven't actually seen the report yet. The lab report was faxed to my work place over the weekend so I will see it Monday.
