lyme disease and your liver?

Hey Y'all...

I just got back from my doctor and one of the parts of my liver test came back bad...my bilirubin total was abnormally high. i can't really find anything online that connects your liver and lyme, does anyone have any knowledge in the area? i guess id almost feel better if it was from the lyme bc I'm 25 and have always been so healthy and now all of a sudden i feel like my body's falling apart! I have the specialist on Monday and she said to check-in with him bc I'll have to come back and do an ultrasound if it's not related, but Monday seems really far right now I appreciate anyone's feedback...

Re: lyme disease and your liver?

Hi Ashley,

Sorry to hear about your liver. I don't know much about it but Jeanne (wackowoman) posted awhile ago about how her liver shut down because of Lyme. She is doing much better now with her liver thanks to Dr. David.

Hopefully, Jeanne will come on to the site and explain what happened to her liver.

I wish I could be of more help,
Denise

Re: lyme disease and your liver?

Ashley,

I found the post about Jeanne and her liver shutting down. The reason was because of Ammonia (ammonia is one of the toxins caused when the lyme bacterias are being killed off).

I have ammonia in my brain which causes my brain fog. I am taking Dr. Jernigan's Pale Spike Lobelia to break down the Ammonia. Jeanne recommended that I also take Dr. J's product called Silphitrin as that also breaks down ammonia.

I hope that helps,
Denise

Re: lyme disease and your liver?

OMG, I just went to dr. m today. well yesterday I had the blood work and today he personally called me and said get here immediatley. I went in for another blood test. My ammonia level is 140,normal is 45. I'm scared half to death. I understand this means liver failure.

Please help. I'm worrying myself sick over this..... please please...........

Re: lyme disease and your liver?

Don't panic, liver's can rebuild themselves in several months. When I arrived at Dr. J's office my liver was shutting down. When we left Portland to go to Kansas, I was not sure I would make it back to Oregon I was so ill. I didn't say anything to anyone because I thought I was just being melodramatic, but I guess not...

Dr's are just learning how Lyme causes ammonia in the heart. liver, and brain.(more of it's nasty poison) Then the liver becomes so overloaded it cannot do it's job correctly to get rid of the ammonia. I was on pale spike and silphitrn (huge amounts)to break down the ammonia, as well as 2 product's called Juva (to rebuild the liver). I was in Kansas 3 weeks the first time to work on liver and Lyme. Had to go back after a couple of months, but in that time my liver had completely 'rebuilt' itself and was functioning correctly. So don't give up hope - find a Dr. that knows about the ammonia connection (it is fairly new info) and don't give up. While I still get frustrated with how my brain functions, much of me is much better! Hang in there. You can beat this!!

Re: lyme disease and your liver?

My liver wasn't handling the toxins very well. That is one of the reasons I am pulsing the meds 3 days a week. I also take milk thistle. (which helps the liver function)
Prayers..............Marsha

Re: lyme disease and your liver?

Dear Ashley & Earle,

I am not what you would call medically inclined never having been trained in the field but are you talking about a liver enzymes test that is done regularly while on strong antibiotics? If so mine went from 40 - 737 one week while on a rocephin IV (9th week of treatment). The doctor's office called and had me stop immediately. I went in the next week and they pulled the picc-line and the counts had come down considerably and within 2 weeks were back to normal after stopping meds. I am now on orals and like Pearlscale and many others on here I take milk thistle (Source Naturals) to keep te liver and gall bladder clean. I wished I had known about this product while on the IV.

Re: lyme disease and your liver?

ashley and earle,

glad you both posted as i know knowledge is power... the more you know will help. will be very interested in what your doctors recommend. try not to worry too much. sounds like there is hope. glad you have this site to go to... i know it must be scary to get such news...

maureen,

did you and crist discuss testing liver enzymes at some point down the road? i've been on orals now almost a year and wonder if i shouldn't be tested...

used to take milk thistle and stopped, guess i should pick it back up.

Re: lyme disease and your liver?

cj, get tested as soon as possible. ask specifically for the ammonia, not just regular levels. mine 140 and normal is 40-50 i think.

oh, hon, if you ever do want to change doctors because of trip expenses dr. m in bedford is a nationally recognized guy too. he's got patients who come from little rock, oklahoma city and all over.

just a suggestion.

oh, i just went to wallie world and bought milk thistle. hope it helps.

Re: lyme disease and your liver?

cj

Just wanted to second what earle said about getting tested. I am tested monthly for liver enzymes and when I was on IV I was tested weekly.

Re: lyme disease and your liver?

Hi all,

I was reading Dr. Jernigan's book again a couple of days ago, and I happened to come across a chapter where Dr. J talks about antibiotics and the liver. He said that when anyone is taking antibiotics, it always affects the liver.

Jeanne has talked about a product that Dr. J makes called Silphium which breaks down the ammonia while taking antibiotics and also helps with herxes.

He goes on to say that Silphium is also beneficial at clearing nitrous oxide, the metabolite of ammonia in the musculoskeletal system.

Nitrous oxide accumulates in the joints and muscles in reaction to Borrelia burgdorferi and other Borrelia strain spirochetes, which release ammonia which is almost instantly converted into nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide causes a hyper-inflammatory response in the tissues leading to joint and muscle pain and stiffness.

Thought that was interesting. I am going to order this Silphium, sounds like a great product to take!

Re: lyme disease and your liver?

Dear cj,

Yes somewhere in the novel Dr. C gave us it talked about testing every so often while on orals. I don't know if he was specific but I do remember when I was on the IV it was weekly but the ID doctor didn't test as often on orals. I have continued to take the milk thistle as a precaution even during the days I skipped meds because of herxing.

Maureen

Dear Denise,

I am pretty sure that the Silphium or Silphitrin or whatever it is was one of the things Dr. J's gal talked to me about. I think she said to add it to the pale Spike and let sit for a minute or so. The neuro-antitox she is sending is for the muscle/joint specifically and she felt this was the best one for me because of the mobility. She said the lyme obviously has gotten into these areas. I was hoping it would all be here today but maybe Monday. Take it nice and easy and clean little by little this week so you will be ready for your date next weekend. I'm so excited for you.

Re: lyme disease and your liver?

Hi Maureen,

I know it's only been 5 days since you have the Silphium and Pale Spike Lobelia, just curious if you notice any changes as of yet?

I am waiting for my bottle of Silphium to arrive, now I will be taking 4 products in my "Jernigan" Cocktail!

The inspector came this past Monday and thank goodness, everything was fine, today I ran around like my old self doing errands, getting papers from my Bank for my new mortgage, etc., etc. It's been such a busy week for me that I didn't clean like I planned! Hey, priorities, priorities, right?

Let me know how you are feeling.

Hugs,
Denise
