Which Lyme med helped your dizziness best?

I have this Disequilibrium, or "rocking/swaying" type Vertigo. Which meds have helped you?

Detox baths and colloidal silver...but now if I had to do it again I would have taken Andrographis instead of the silver.
The baths are the most important.

Re: Which Lyme med helped your dizziness best?

Hi Rodney99.

I have major balance / dizziness issues from Lyme.

I recommend the detox baths, although they didn't work for me, many many people here have found relief from them.

My experience is that as I s-l-o-w-l-y recover from my Lyme and Bartonella (a co-infection of Lyme) using high dose antibiotics, my balance s-l-o-w-l-y gets better.

On a bad day, I'm walking into walls and the room will tilt. On a good day, I can drive and walk.

I understand exactly what you're going through. It stinks!

Peace and health to you,
Mickie

Re: Which Lyme med helped your dizziness best?

Hi Rodney99.

Currently I am on Levaquin (for Bartonella co-infection), plaquenil and IV Zithromax.

Over the past three years, I have tried Omnicef, Ceftin, Biaxin, Doxycyline, IV Rocephin, Tindamax and Malarone. There may be a few more I tried, but I can't remember -

Each person responds differently to antibiotics. It depends on how long you were infected, which strain of the bacteria you have, if you have co-infections, how strong your immune system is and your individual metabolism.

I wish I could tell you to try drug X and that will help your balance/vertigo issues, but I can't. It's different for everyone.

I also have vision problems that stem from the loss of my balance mechanisms. I have oscillopsia, which means everything in my field of vision shakes; just like an old home movie with the motion control turned off.

It's absolutely horrible. Even when I'm sitting still, my field of vision jiggles in time with my heartbeat.

Do you have any vision problems from your vertigo/dizziness? I'm desperate for some relief from this.

I did see a renowned ear/balance specialist at the University of Penn. I spent the whole day taking every balance test known to mankind.

At the end of it all, he looked at the results and told me "You lost your balance mechanisms on both your left and right sides." Well ... DUH ... tell me something I don't know or tell me how to fix it.

Unfortunately for me, there is no fix so I have to live with this forever. I hope you find relief.

If you hop over the inner ear boards, those nice folks may be able to direct you to some therapy or the name of a good ear doctor. Not every ear doctor is able to treat vertigo, there's a name for the specialist who treats it but I forget (neuro-otologo-something?).

Take care and try not to worry, with treatment you can get better!

Mickie

Re: Which Lyme med helped your dizziness best?

thanks for your reply. I am on depakote for the dizziness and it helps some. I have a rx for Elavil which really helps some people. I haven't started taking it yet. I hope it works and helps my daily headaches. Look up Migraine associated vertigo and the meds for that. I'm not sure ear meds will help me, as My balance loss is from my brain and not my ears. My neuro understands this and we will try a few meds to see what helps. Topamax will be next if the elavil doesn't do it. Good Luck.

Re: Which Lyme med helped your dizziness best?

The other thing I meant to point out is the imbalance problem really points to the eight cranial nerve. Lyme is an inflammatory disease. The cells are inflamed and can't pass, receive both information and nutrition. Even though we usually have specific symptoms that are worse then others which we sometimes focus on, until Lyme is in remission, the symptoms will keep changing. I don't think the silver is the answer. Although when I was desperate I had hope it was.
I think you really have to decide to be aggressive with a good Lyme Specialist and rely on them. Committing to the time and money and uncertainty is the most difficult part.
Trying to treat yourself at least in my experience cost me a lot of suffering and time. I may be back someday and say different, but deciding to travel to another state and leave work to put 110 percent into overcoming the disease and co infections was one of the most wise decisions I've made.

Re: Which Lyme med helped your dizziness best?

I wonder if anyone else here has had their inner ear checked by an otolaryngologist. He verified that my right inner ear was in fact damaged by the infection. The vagus nerve is affected as well, but the "vestibular" sensors in the right ear were the primary cause of my dizzyness.

Re: Which Lyme med helped your dizziness best?

I did vestibular testing with an ENT. All they told me was that it wasn't my ears that were the problem. They said it was from my brain. So I'm trying some meds to see what helps. Depakote did help some, and stopped most of the hand tremors, but wasn't as effective as I had hoped. Now trying Elavil at 10mg. So far so good.

Re: Which Lyme med helped your dizziness best?

I take ativan .5 mg and it helps decrease my dizziness to where I can function everyday.
I have had severe dizziness every day for four months - it is slowly getting better as I take the ativan. when it is severe I take 1mg. You can take it two or three times a day.

also, it is such a low dose that i am not drowsy. with other meds - i would sleep all day. i have a five and two year old and this works the best for me
