Ms Doctor Thinks I Have Lymes

Hi
I went to see an MS specialist today, as my neuro thinks I may be going down that path. However, I have also been tested for lymes and the result of the blood test came back as weakened results. (whatever that means!). Anyway, after having an MRI she said it was reassuringly clear, but I do have oligoclonal bands in my spinal fluid. So fitting me into an exact slot is difficult. Based on my history she wasnt 100% sure but her thoughts are that I possibly have Lymes disease and therfore has requested another blood test to see if anything shows up in a more positive way this time. She said she will then speak to the infectious disease clinic and see based on the results what course of treatment they recommend.
I was very suprised when I spoke to her today, I really didn't expect her to suspect lymes disease. She says there are so many different strains and I need an antibiotic given intravenously to get through the blood brain barrier for it to work. She also said that she cannot garauntee a cure but its worth giving it a shot. I have started using a wheelchair as I am finding it very difficult to get around now and Im in so much pain in my back. Do you guys think this woman is on the right track with what she is proposing...Any advice would really help me...Thanks...

Re: Ms Doctor Thinks I Have Lymes

Hi topsy123. I recommend getting copies of all your test results.

It is always good to have other possibilities checked. There is no completely reliable test for Lyme, and results can vary by lab. It is my understanding that the ELISA or titer is the least reliable test. Is this the one you had done? The Western Blot is a better test if done at a Lyme lab such as IgeneX. It lists a series of numerical bands with a + - or IND after each one. Regardless if this test is positive, Lyme doctors often look at which bands are present. Some are specfic for Lyme.

It is important to see a doctor who is familiar with Lyme. Besides Lyme, ticks can also transmit several co-infections including Babesiosis, two types of Ehrlichiosis (HME & HGE), Bartonella, and Mycoplasma. Many people who have Lyme are co-infected. It may affect treatment choice and progress. It is important to be tested for these by a Lyme reputable lab such as IgeneX in Palo Alto, CA. Maybe your doctor would agree to have you tested there.

I have heard of two doctors in the UK who may be Lyme knowledgeable. If you would like their names, let me know.

Good luck!
