Lyme's connection? My problems + testing options...

Hello all,

Since September 5, I feel like a switch has been flipped in my life. In the week after the 5th of September, I experienced quite a few symptoms:

Shortness of breath
Tightness in chest
Loss of focus / Brain fog (at times, lucid dream-like)
Tightness in neck and shoulders
Restlessness
Strange sensation in my right arm/leg (slight numbness)
Slight headaches (I rarely had headaches!)

On the 9th I met with a neurologist, who ordered an extensive blood test (CBC, CMP, Thyroid, etc)/MRI/EEG. His initial impression was possibly seizure, or anxiety. All tests came back as GOOD. Something that made me feel better, obviously.

The symptoms continued, I was prescribed Xanax to take when I felt any of the above symptoms coming on - which at this point were still occurring, although less intense and more often in the evenings. The xanax seemed to help, and helped calm me down to the point where I could allow the "waves" of symptoms to pass.

To this day, I still have not felt "right". If anything, I have become used to the many of the feelings (such as tight chest/slight brain fog/sometimes shortness of breath), which can occur daily - all day.

I also find that I am tired, a LOT. After workouts I feel 10x more tired and fatigued than ever before. Sometimes during the day, for no reason I will feel very week as well.

At times, I feel an odd sensation in my lower legs, wrists, and or neck/shoulders - not like the numb feeling described above - but more of a strange sensation that leads me to believe in a moment or two I wont be able to move!

So basically, I allowed a month or so to let myself calm down - in case it was in fact anxiety/stress that was causing the symptoms in the first place. I allowed this, despite the fact that before 9.5.08 there were no pressing issues on my mind or in my life to cause anxiety in the first place. If anything, all these symptoms are causing the anxiety!!!!

Present day-
I have researched my problem to the point that either Lyme's or Candida show up as my final destination. I asked my neurologist for a Lyme's test and he okayed the blood work, but my lab prescription simply says "Lab: Lyme's (titr)?, 782.0. No specification of which test to take.

I still experience many of the symptoms described above, in all different combinations/intensities, at all different times of day - but usually in waves. Meaning, they will hit - but then after say 30 minutes or so they will die off a bit (leaving me more weak and scared than anything else). Sometimes the feeling of brain fog / weakness is so intense that I just don't want to deal with ANYTHING anymore.

My neurologist wants to put me on a 3 day seizure test (forgot what the name was)...but basically it records for three days.

Sorry for the enormous post here, but a lot of you are very knowledgeable and may be able to point me in the right direction.

What types of blood work should I request when I go to the lab (I pretty much have a blank prescription sheet).
I live in Southern California (Los Angeles).

Have your doctor order tests from Igenex. They are a lab that specializes in Lyme disease.

See a Lyme Literate medical doctor. If you call Igenex, they should be able to refer you to a LLMD.

Re: Lyme's connection? My problems + testing options...

hey nexis, i appreciate the info. i found their website, and will be in touch with them soon.

id like to investigate other possible causes to my symptoms in the mean time, if it turns out that i do not have lyme disease. perhaps others have looked into candida and can offer some input.

and of course i welcome any comments on my situation in regards to lyme disease as well. thank you!

Hi California1, if you pursue the route of Lyme. It would do you good to get to a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor. Even though Igenex is the best lab around for Lyme testing. It still doesn't mean they are full proof. And if you get a negative and you truly do have lyme then you'll still be searching. A LLMD will go on your symptoms and not soley on a lyme test.

I tested negative both times through Igenex. And yes I had a full blown case of lyme...

If you would like some names of any doc around you, you might look at the top of this board under Doctors and Clinics. Or try posting a new thread for a lyme doc around you. I do believe there is one in Malibu.

good luck!

Re: Lyme's connection? My problems + testing options...

Igenex gave me Dr. Harris in Malibu. I've made an appointment, which sadly is near the end of November. But apparently he only has one Lyme patient per week.

In the mean time, I will pursue other possible remedies.
